Beloit Drops Home Opener To Cornell

BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit's football team fell to Cornell College 35-14 in what was the Buccaneers first home game of the season. The game was a lot more even than the score indicated, with Cornell holding just a 383-335 edge in total offense. Beloit passed for 223 yards, while Cornell gained 342 on the ground.

Cornell (1-1) got the scoring started midway through the opening quarter when John Smith found Joel Lacy for a four-yard score. The Rams would double that lead with four and a half minutes left in the second period when Tony Gomez found paydirt from four yards out. Beloit (0-2) added a quick scoring drive just before halftime to get on the board, as Jacob Shafer found AJ Fitzpatrick for an eight yard score.

Cornell added to their lead in the third quarter, as Joel Lacy raced 68 yards for a touchdown, which came three plays after Cornell intercepted Beloit in the end zone. The Buccaneers continued to battle however, scoring on a 13-yard touchdown from Shafer to Jeto-Rivar Sanon mid-way through the third quarter. Cornell answered again however, as Lacy found the end zone from five yards out with just one minute left in the third. Cornell added a four-yard touchdown from Isaiah Spencer to cap the scoring.

Shafer finished with 223 yards on 12-of-26 passing, while Marquez Drake led the Buccaneers with 110 yards on 22 carries (5.0 ypc). Fitzpatrick led all receivers with four catches for 118 yards.

Cornell was led by Lacy's 153 yards on 17 carries (9.0 ypc), while Spencer added 85 yards on 12 carries (7.1 ypc). Quarterback John Smith completed 7-of-9 passes for 41 yards.

Defensively, Beloit was led by Ethan Flores' 14 tackles. Quentin Schane and Eli Allen each recorded a half sack.

Beloit will try to rebound next weekend when they'll travel to University of Chicago. That game will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Chicago, Ill.
