DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Beloit College Men's Basketball team kicked off the 2023-24 season in Defiance, Ohio at the 48th Annual Purple & Gold Tournament. The Bucs went 2-0 over two days, defeated the hosts, Defiance College on Friday night and Bethany College this morning. Beloit beat Defiance 81-64 with
Semaj Roy (Chicago, Ill.) leading the way with 19 points. This morning they defeated Bethany 72-61 with
Azeez Ganiyu (Beloit, Wis.) scoring 15.
Game 1 vs Defiance:
The Buccaneers led from start to finish in this game, taking a 44-32 lead into the break, and outscoring the Yellow Jackets 37-32 over the final 20 minutes. Aside from Roy's 20 points, he also collected 4 boards and added two steals. Ganiyu put up 13 points, secured 4 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.
Jabari Scuefield (Hazel Crest, Ill.) and
Clayton Jenny (Edgerton, Wis.) rounded out the double digit scorers for the Bucs, Scuefield scored 12 while Jenny had arguably the most complete game, scoring 11, securing 5 boards, dishing out 5 assists and recording 5 steals.
Game 2 vs Bethany:
The Buccaneers picked up right where they left off, with three players scoring double figures and two recording double-doubles. Ganiyu led with a double-double, 15 points and 10 boards. Roy added a double-double of his own, with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also dished out three assists. Scuefield scored 10 and secured three rebounds. Off the bench,
Lathan Lewis (Rockford, Ill.) scored 7, grabbed 6 boards and recorded one assist.
Beloit is on the road again on Wednesday, November 15th in Rockford. Tip-off against the Regents is 7 p.m.
