Beloit Drops Two Games On Opening Day

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Beloit's softball team opened their 2023 campaign in Florida on Sunday, losing to both Lasell University and Saint Joseph's-Long Island by scores of 8-6 and 5-3, respectively.

In their first game of the day, Lasell took an early lead with a run in the top of the fourth, but Beloit answered right back, as Maddie Moser scored on an Isabel Johnson single. Lasell took the lead again with a run in the second, before breaking the game open with four more in the third. They would build a seven-run lead entering the final inning after scoring once in both the top of the sixth and seventh. Beloit tried to mount a comeback with five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but that comeback fell just short.

Beloit finished the game with 11 hits, including three from Johnson, who also drove in a pair of runs, and two from both Siddalee Meyers and Briana Arteaga. Harrison Harrison allowed just one earned run while striking out two in four innings of relief.

In the day's second game, Saint Joseph's struck first with two runs in the bottom of the third. Beloit answered with two runs in the top of the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI double by Jess Coppe. Saint Joseph's grabbed the lead again in the bottom of that frame on an RBI single to shortstop. Moser then tied the score again the following inning with a solo home run. That tie lasted until the bottom of that inning when a two-run double proved to be the difference.

Beloit finished the game with five hits from five different players, while Saint Joseph's registered six base knocks.

Beloit will be in action again on Monday when they'll play Augsburg and Hamilton at 9 and 11:30 a.m. Eastern Time, respectively. Both games will be played in Auburndale, Fla.
