Beloit Splits Pair of Lopsided Games

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Beloit's offense was on full display on Thursday, as their bats seem to get hotter with the Florida sun. The Buccaneers defeated Central College 19-2 in seven innings to start the day, collecting 21 hits, which are just two shy of the school's single game record. They would be on the other end of things in the nightcap, a 13-1 loss to Amherst.

In the day's first game, Beloit (4-3) wasted no time, scoring two runs on four hits, including an RBI single by both Brett Kiger and Miles Souza. The Buccaneers added six runs on four more hits in the second, with the biggest blow coming on a two-run homer down the right field line by Garrison Ferone. Souza added three more RBI on a bases-clearing double, while Matt O'Leary also drove in a run with a double.

Central's only two runs came in the top of the third and fourth innings, before Beloit put the game away with a five-spot in the fourth and six more runs in the sixth.

Souza finished the game going 4-for-4 at the plate with six RBI, both of which are one shy of the single game school record, while recording a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Kiger was also perfect at the dish, going 3-for-3 with two walks, two RBI, and four runs scored. Ferone and Connor Vogel each added three base knocks, with Ferone falling just a double short of the cycle. That duo also combined to drive in six runs and score six more.

Aiden Phipps (2-0) continued his strong start to the season, allowing just one earned run while scattering six hits and striking out five in a seven-inning complete game. Two of Central's six hits went for doubles.

In the day's second game, Beloit played another seven-inning game, but it was Amherst (3-1-1), who came away with the 13-1 victory. After Amherst got out to a 3-0 lead after three innings, Beloit tried to make a game of it, with an RBI single off the bat of Zenger, scoring Vogel from second. Amherst then put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, and six more in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Beloit's two htis came off the bat of Ferone and Zenger. Only seven of Amherst's 13 runs were earned. Amherst's starting pitcher allowed just one earned run on two hits, while striking out five in six innings of work.

Beloit will be in action again as they'll bring their 2023 spring trip to a close against SUNY-Oneonta and Greenville at 9 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. Eastern Time, respectively.
