Beloit Ends Spring Trip With Pair of Losses

DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Beloit College baseball team brought their 2023 Spring Trip to a close on Friday, losing to SUNY-Oneonta and Greenville by scores of 14-7 and 15-11, respectively.

In their first game of the day, Beloit struck first, as Brett Kiger smacked a solo home run to left for his third homer of the young season. Oneonta matched that with a sac fly in the bottom of that inning, before taking their first lead the following inning on a trio of RBI singles. Oneonta would add to their lead in the fifth, scoring on a bases loaded balk and a passed ball, while also lacing a two-run double to center.

Oneonta plated two more runs in the sixth to take a 10-1 advantage, but Beloit kept fighting, as Garrison Ferone and Connor Vogel each recorded an RBI single in the seventh, followed by a two-run single by Evan Zenger. Devin Irwin and Ian Casey would each drive in a run in the final inning, but it was not enough to overcome that early deficit.

Beloit (4-5) finished the game with nine hits, led by Miles Souza's two base knocks. Oneonta finished with 15 hits, as 11 different players recorded a hit.

In the second and final game of the day, and the trip, the Buccaneers fell behind early, as Greenville scored four times in the top of the first. Beloit got one of those back in the bottom of that frame when Matt O'Leary led off with a home run to dead center. Greenville added two more in the second, but Beloit mounted a comeback with three in the third, which saw Miles Souza drive in two runs with a double to right center, in addition to an RBI single from Vogel.

Greenville took a 10-7 lead into the ninth, before scoring five runs in that inning, which proved to be the difference in the game, as Beloit crossed the plate four times in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough.

The two teams combined for 33 hits, with Beloit recording 15 of those. The Buccaneers were led by Kizer's 4-for-6 performance, which included three doubles, raises his team-best batting average to .533 through nine games. O'Leary and Souza each added three hits, while Vogel drove in a team-best three runs. Ten of Greenville's 18 hits went for extra bases.

Beloit will now return home and will next be in action Tuesday when they'll travel to Wheaton (Ill.). That single game will begin at 5 p.m. at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream, Ill.
