MONMOUTH, Ill. - Beloit's men's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season Saturday afternoon in thrilling fashion, needing six overtimes to defeat Monmouth (Ill.) by a score of 7-6. The two teams combined for 96 shots on the day, with Mounouth holding a 52-44 advantage.
Beloit (1-4) opened the scoring with a trio of first quarter goals.
Jordan Rice scored twice in the first 10 minutes, while
Will Palmer also scored in that period. After Monmouth's Ben Lafrenere got the Fighting Scots on ther board,
Liam Walker got that goal back, putting the Buccaneers up 4-1. Monmouth then rallied with three goals in the final 12 minutes of the half to tie the score at four.
The lone goal of the third quarter came from Rice, as he completed the hat trick to put Beloit in the lead once more. Monmouth again tied the score with a goal mid-way through the fourth quarter, but Palmer gave Beloit the lead again just 33 seconds later. Monmouth again tied the score on Michael Casey's third goal of the day with five minutes remaining in regulation, sending the two teams to overtime. In the sudden death period, Neither team scored until the sixth overtime, which saw Palmer record a hat trick with his third goal of the day, sending Beloit home with the victory.
Beloit's
Eric Seo recorded 22 saves at Goal Keeper for the Buccaneers, while playing every minute of the contest. Nehemiah Declaw also played every minute between the pipes for Monmouth, making 16 saves.
The Buccaneers will be in action again on Wednesday when they'll return home to host Carroll (Wis.) University. That game will begin at 7 p.m. at Strong Stadium in Beloit, Wis.
