BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit's baseball team continued on Tuesday what they achieved on Monday - beating Grinnell. The Buccaneers completed the three-game series sweep by taking both games of a doubleheader, which keeps the Buccaneers undefeated in conference play. Beloit won the first game 11-1 in eight innings, before holding off a late Grinnell rally for the doubleheader sweep with a 7-6 win in game number two.
Now winners of four straight, Beloit (8-5, 3-0 MWC) got the scoring started in the third inning of game one when
Matt O'Leary and
Garrison Ferone each singled in a run. O'Leary added an RBI double in the fifth, which was promptly followed by an RBI single by Ferone and a run-scoring double off the bat of
Connor Vogel.
Grinnell (3-11, 0-3 MWC) would score their first run of the contest in the top of the seventh on an RBI single through the left side of the infield. Beloit answered by doubling their score with a five-run seventh, keyed by RBI singles from Brett Kizer and
Miles Souza, and a two-run triple off the wall by
Evan Zenger, who nearly cleared the wall with the hit. Ferone added an RBI double to left center the following inning to end the game.
The top half of Beloit's batting order raked in this game, going 9-for-20 with 10 RBI and eight runs scored. O'Leary led the way from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, two stolen bases, and two RBI, while Ferone went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored out of the number two spot in the order.
Eamon Burke (1-1) earned the win by pitching 6.1 innings of scoreless ball, while striking out two batters.
In the day's second game, Beloit again struck first, as they trailed for just one inning of the three-game series. Souza got the scoring started for the Bucs in the first with a two-run single to center. After Grinnell scored once in the top of the second, Beloit got that run back in the bottom half on an RBI single off the bat of Ferone, before O'Leary continued to swing a hot bat with a triple to right center, marking the second consecutive day he has recorded a three-bagger. Grinnell scored on an RBI double in the fifth, but Souza tacked on two RBI on a single to center for the Bucs in the bottom of that inning.
Grinnell scored once more in the sixth, before Souza again came up clutch with a much-needed insurance run on an RBI single in the seventh. Grinnell made things interesting in the late innings, scoring on an error and steal of home plate in the eighth, before singling home another run in the ninth, cutting Beloit's lead to a single run with two outs and a runner on first.
Caleb Lasher would slam the door shut however, inducing the next batter to popout to shortstop, to record his second save of the young season.
Ferone led the Buccaneers at the plate, going 4-for-4 in the second game (and 9-for-13 in the series) with an RBI and run scored. Souza went 3-for-4 at the dish with five RBI, while
Jack Alport added two hits, a stolen base, and two runs scored.
Kaiya Nishino (2-1) earned the victory, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
Beloit won't waste time getting back on the field, as they'll travel to University of Chicago Wednesday for a single game, beginning at 3 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.
