ASHLAND, Wis. - Beloit and Northland played a competitive game Saturday afternoon, with neither team leading by more than three goals all day, before Northland ultimately pulled away in the final quarter to defeat the Buccaneers 10-7. Northland also held a 37-20 shot advantage on the afternoon.
Beloit opened the scoring to take their first lead of the season on a
Liam Walker goal mid-way through the first quarter, thanks to an assist from
Samuel Van Der Kolk. Northland then scored the next three goals, before Beloit tied things up on second quarter goals by
Brenon Reed and Walker's second of the contest. Northland then scored another trio of goals, including a pair by Brodie Trollop, to take a 6-3 halftime lead.
Beloit battled back in the second half, as
Will Palmer found the back of the net twice in the first four minutes of the third quarter to cut Northland's lead to one. The Lumberjacks answered with two goals of their own, but Palmer scored his third goal of the period just before the horn to cut the deficit to 8-6 entering the final quarter. Reed cut that lead in half with a goal in the opening minute of the fourth, but Northland got some breathing room with an Andrew Liwiski goal mid-way through the period, before capping the scoring with another goal in the final minutes.
Beloit Goal Keeper
Eric Seo recorded a season-high 19 saves in the game, while playing all 60 minutes, facing 37 shots. Northland's Tony Donaldson also played the entire game, saving five of the 20 shots that he faced.
The Buccaneers will return home on March 11 to battle Cornell College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Strong Stadium in Beloit, Wis.
