MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Beloit's softball team suffered two narrow losses Friday night at Cornell College, losing to the Rams by scores of 1-0, in eight innings, nd 5-4. This marked The Buccaneers' first true road games of the season after a 12-game homestand, which followed their Spring Trip.
The first game of the day saw the two teams go into extra innings tied at zero. Cornell then won the game in the bottom of the eighth when they singled up the middle to score the lone run of the contest.
Beloit finished with three hits, coming from
Siddalee Meyers,
Briana Arteaga, and
Kaylee Witte.
Cora Aubert (3-6) suffered the hard-luck loss, allowing just one run on nine hits and striking out four in 7.2 innings for the complete game. Cornell's pitcher also pitched the entire game, allowing just three hits in the shutout.
The day's second game saw Beloit strike first, scoring three times in the top of the first. Their first run would come on a sac fly off the bat of Witte, before Arteaga scored on a sac bunt from
Isabel Johnson. They would score their other run in that frame on an error. A Cornell home run brought Beloit's lead to 3-1, before cutting that lead in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Beloit was able to get some breathing room with an RBI double by Witte in the top of the seventh, but Cornell erased that deficit to win the game with a three-run bottom of the seventh, scoring the game's winning run on a two-out RBI single.
Beloit finished the game with seven hits, led by two from
Angela Donath. Cornell recorded nine hits, including a pair of players with more than one base knock.
The Buccaneers will be in action again on Sunday when they'll play a doubleheader at Grinnell. Those games will begin at 1 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa.
