BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit's baseball team swept a doubleheader from Illinois College Saturday afternoon, giving the Buccaneers 19 conference victories this season, which is the most in Midwest Conference history. The Bucs won the first game convincingly, 16-1, before completing the sweep with a 7-4 victory in game two.
Beloit (27-11, 19-4 MWC) scored early and often in the opening game, plating one run in the first inning on a sac fly by
Brett Kiger, before adding seven more runs in the second. That inning included an RBI single by
Matt O'Leary, a two-run single by
Garrison Ferone, an RBI double from
Connor Vogel, and a two-run homer by Kiger, extending his school records to 13 long-balls on the season and 26 in his career.
Illinois College (15-24, 11-12 MWC) scored its lone run on an RBI single in the top of the fourth. That was followed by an eight-run fourth by the Bucs to put the game away. That inning was highlighted by a grand slam over the left field fence off the bat of Ferone. O'Leary,
Miles Souza, and Devin Irwin also drove in one run apiece in that frame.
Beloit finished with 16 hits, with Souza's 3-for-3 performance leading the way. Recording two hits apiece were O'Leary, Ferone, Vogel, Kiger, and
Evan Zenger.
Aiden Phipps (9-0) remained undefeated on the season, while also breaking Beloit's record for single season victories. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out a season-high eight batters in sis strong innings.
The day's second game saw Illinois College take their first lead of the afternoon on a solo homer by Jaydon Davis in the top of the first. That lead didn't last long, as Kiger put the Bucs in front with a two-run double in the bottom of that inning, and he'd later cross the plate on a wild pitch. Illinois College would tie the game on a two-run single by Davis in the third, but Beloit answered again in the bottom of that frame in the form of a
Connor Vogel home run to right field. Vogel would add an RBI single up the middle in the fourth, tying him for the most RBI in a single season in program history (49).Â
Davis drove in an other run with a single in the top of the fifth. The Buccaneers then added two runs in the bottom of that inning to cap the scoring, thanks to a bases loaded walk and an RBI double by Ferone.Â
Vogel led Beloit with two of the team's seven hits.
Harvey Pena (2-1) was spectacular in relief, firing 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, while allowing just three hits and striking out nine batters.
The Buccaneers will try to complete the season series sweep of Illinois College on Sunday, as the two teams will play a single game at Noon. That game will be played at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium in Beloit, Wis.
