BELOIT. Wis. - Last night the Beloit Buccaneers football team defeated the Regents of Rockford University in the 2nd annual Battle of the Rock River. This years matchup had more on the line, with the winner receiving the "Battle of the Rock River Trophy". After a back and forth game, the Bucs held on for a 34-27 victory.
Rockford scored the first two touchdowns to go up 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter. The Bucs cut into the Regents lead when
Cooper Larrabee (Bow, NH) caught a short pass from
Jacob Shafer (Dixon, IL). With under 30 seconds left in the half,
Rafael Cervantes Jr. (Dallas, TX) nailed a 30 yard field goal to bring BC within 4, 14-10 heading into halftime.
Out of half time, the Bucs scored first. Schafer found
Tommy Dixson (Glenn Heights, TX) for a 37 yard touchdown connection. RU answered on the next series, regaining the lead with a long reception of their own (21-17). With under two minutes to play in the 3rd, Schafer found
AJ Fitzpatrick for 22 yards, giving BC a 24-21 lead. Both teams scored touchdowns in the 4th and the Bucs secured the win with a 1 yard quarterback scramble by Schafer (31-21) and a 16 yard field goal by Cervantes Jr. (34-27). They capped off the win with a huge stop on the Regents final drive of the game.
Beloit returns to the field on Saturday September 9th, at Knox. Kick off is set for 1pm.
