GALESBURG, Ill. - The Beloit College Women's basketball team traveled to Galesburg this afternoon for an afternoon clash against the Prairie Fire (11-4, 3-3 MWC). Prior to the game, Knox sat in third in the MWC, with Beloit (5-11, 3-5 MWC) seventh. While the upset didn't move Beloit at all, it did drop KC down to 5th.
After trailing by just one, 15-16 after the first ten minutes, the Buccaneers put together masterful 2nd and 3rd quarters to take a 50-39 lead into the final ten minutes. Over the first six minutes of the 4th, the Prairie Fire climbed out of the hole. They put together a 14-2 run to take a one point lead with 4 minutes remaining. Back-to-back jumpers from
Johanna McNair (Fishers, Ind.) and
Hadja Bayo (Round Rock, Texas) jump started the offense and kept the Buccaneers in the game. The final second provided a roller coaster of emotions for both teams. The Prairie Fire hit what looked to be a buzzer beating put back to seal the deal but the referees put .5 seconds up and gave Beloit one final chance. With the ball right in front of their bench, McNair looked to inbound the ball. She found
Hannah Welte (Clinton, Wis.) curling off a double screen. As time expired, Welte was fouled shooting a three and was awarded the free throws. She hit all three to give the Bucs the win.
In another productive day off the bench,
Hailey Johnson (South Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Buccaneers with 18 points on 8-11 shooting. Johnson also secured four rebounds. Along with her game winning free throws, Welte totaled 16 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Elizabeth Kalk (Clinton, Wis.) rounded out the double digit scoring for Beloit. Kalk added 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Although she only scored two, Bayo grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Buccaneers head back to Flood Arena on Wednesday, January 17th when they host the Foresters of Lake Forest College. Tip off for the MWC match up is set for 7:30pm.
