BELOIT, Wis. - The Beloit College Football team hosted the Cornell College Rams at Strong Stadium for a Midwest Conference afternoon clash. The Buccaneers (1-4, 1-3 MWC) and their defense held off the Rams (3-2, 3-1 MWC) as long as possible but fell 28-0 at the end of regulation.
Three first quarter sacks by the Buccaneers defense held the game scoreless after the first fifteen minutes.
The first Buccaneer sack came in the second series of the game. The Bucs went three and out on their opening possession. On third and six, the Rams were on the Bucs 43-yard line.
Elijah Henderson (San Antonio, TX) got to the quarterback for a seven-yard loss. The ensuing Cornell punt was fair caught by
AJ Fitzpatrick (Chicago, IL) at the Beloit 26. Facing third and one,
Jacob Shafer (Dixon, IL) found
Tommy Dixson (Glenn Heights, TX) for a 32-yard completion. The drive ended four plays later after
Rafael Cervantes Jr. (Dallas, TX) was unsuccessful from 47-yards out.
Josh Martinez (Beloit, WI) and the Buccaneers defense came up strong again the next possession. On third and two Martinez broke free and sacked the Rams quarterback for a six yard loss.
After coming up empty on offense once again the Rams got the ball back with under a minute left in the 1st quarter. The Buccaneers final sack came via
Wyatt Hughes (Key West, FL) and
Jurian Rivera (Homestead, FL). They combined to drag the CC quarterback down eight yards behind the line.
The first points of the game came with under two minutes left in the first half when the Rams had a 13-yard complete go for a touchdown.
Josh Yearby (West Park, FL) spoiled the Rams opening drive in the second half when he intercepted Thomas Monken's pass in the end zone.
Quentin Schane (Newcastle, OK) was in on the pass break up. Unable to string anything together offensively, the Buccaneers punted after six plays.
Cornell took over with 9:14 remaining in the third and milked the clock excessively, with ten rushes in a sixteen play drive that spanned nine minutes and ended with the Rams second touchdown of the game. Cornell scored twice more in the final frame, while the Bucs punted three times and gave the ball away on downs.
The Buccaneers return to Strong Stadium next Saturday to host the Vikings from Lawrence University, Kick off on the 19th is set for 1 pm.
