Football Unable to Capitalize On Turnovers

BELOIT, Wis. - Ten total turnovers led to a back-and-forth game between the Beloit College Buccaneers and the Lawrence University Vikings this afternoon. The Buccaneers (1-5, 1-4 MWC) trailed the Vikings (1-5, 1-4 MWC) 7-3 at halftime and a strong fourth quarter by LU shut the door on a comeback. Lawrence came out on top, 24-10.

A fair catch on the opening kickoff set the Vikings up at their own 25 yard line. After making their way to midfield, Aiden Williams' pass on first and ten was intercepted by Jurian Rivera (Homestead, FL) after Mitch Douglas (Belmont, WI) made the initial break up. Taking over on their own 44, the Bucs made it across midfield before the Vikings defense stepped up and made the stop. Forced to put, Tatian Dobrinich (Litchfield, IL) pinned Lawrence on their own 20 yard line. The ensuing Viking possession once again ended with a Buccaneer interception, this time by Ethan Levra (Elk Mound, WI) at the Beloit 2 yard line. The offensive struggles continued for Beloit who went three and out and were forced to punt. Lawrence was forced to punt with under two to go in the first quarter, the snap was fumbled, and recovered by the Buccaneers and Amani Floyd at the Lawrence 27 yard line. The first quarter ended with the score 0-0.

In prime field position, the Buccaneers found themselves going backwards and two incompletions on third and fourth down led to turnover on downs at the Lawrence 30. The first score of the game came around the 8:45 mark on a LU one yard rush. Beloit posted their first points of the game as time expired in the first half. The Bucs were driving and running out of time when a pass interference call in the end zone gave them one more chance with two seconds on the clock. Rafael Cervantes Jr. (Dallas, TX) converted a 19-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game heading into halftime.

The Buccaneers went three and out to open the second half but Dobrinich's punt rolled all the way to the one yard line before Beloit downed the ball. Lawrence put together their longest drive of the game, a sixteen play 89-yard drive that ended in a 27-yard field goal to extend their lead to 10-3. Beloit tied the game with their best drive of the game which was capped off with a 19-yard touchdown throw from Jacob Shafer (Dixon, IL) to Dominic Guzman (Aurora, IL). Heading into the final quarter, the score was tied at 10.

Lawrence opened the quarter with a three and out of their own before three straight turnovers flip flopped the game for a few minutes. Shafer connected with Chris Moore (Lakeland, FL) for what would have been a 20-yard gain before the Vikings punched the ball loose. The very next play, Williams' pass was picked off by Josh Yearby (West Park, FL) and returned to the Beloit 33. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on LU moved the Bucs to the Beloit 48. To cap off the string of turnovers, Bryan Casado's (Hallandale Beach, FL) 12-yard rush was negated when he fumbled and gave Lawrence the ball back on the Beloit 36.

Facing a 4th and 15, the Vikings drew a pass interference call that gave them a first down and the ball at the Beloit 4-yard line. They completed a four yard pass for the touchdown and after the extra point, the score was 17-10.

Beloit's final two drives ended in interceptions, including a pick six that sealed the deal and gave Lawrence a 24-10 lead.

The Buccaneers are on the road next week at Monmouth College. Kick off from April Zorn Memorial Stadium in Monmouth, Ill. is set for 1 pm.
