EUREKA, Ill. - Much like a few days ago, this afternoon's Beloit College Men's Basketball game was a tale of two halves. This time, the Buccaneers (2-1, 0-0 MWC) overcame a five-point halftime deficit to defeat Eureka College (0-2, 0-0 SLIAC) 77-70 on Saturday afternoon at Reagan Gym.
Azeez Ganiyu (Beloit, Wis.) led the Buccaneers with 18 points and 9 rebounds on efficient 7-of-9 shooting from the field.
Anthony Carter (Greenfield, Wis.) added 17 points, including three crucial 3-pointers and some clutch free throws down the stretch.
Jabari Scuefield (Hazel Crest, Ill.) also reached double figures with 15 points and contributed 3 blocks on the defensive end.
Eureka controlled the first half behind Raymond Bandzoumouna's hot shooting, taking a 32-27 lead into the break. However, the Buccaneer defense tightened in the second half while their offense found its rhythm, outscoring the Red Devils 50-38 in the final 20 minutes.
The game's turning point came late in the second half when Beloit mounted a 9-0 run to turn a 67-63 deficit into a 72-67 lead with just over a minute remaining. Carter sealed the victory with a clutch 3-pointer and two free throws in the final 12 seconds.
For Eureka, Bandzoumouna led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range. Peewee Brown added 21 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort.
Beloit dominated inside, outscoring Eureka 46-32 in the paint and shooting 53% on two- point attempts. The Buccaneers also capitalized on their fast break opportunities, converting them into 15 points while limiting Eureka to just 7 fast-break points.
The victory marked Beloit's first road win of the season. The Buccaneers will look to build on this momentum as their early season schedule continues on Wednesday in Milwaukee against MSOE. Tip off from the Kern Center is set for 7 pm.
