BELOIT, Wis.- For the first time since they started playing each other twice, the Beloit College Women's Basketball team earned the season sweep over the Prairie Fire of Knox College. This afternoon's victory also marked the Bucs 10th win this season, their most since the 09-10 season.
The Buccaneers (10-13, 7-7 MWC) trailed the Prairie Fire (17-6, 9-5 MWC) 23-19 after the first ten minutes of play.
Elizabeth Kalk (Clinton, Wis.) hit three free throws with no time left on the clock after she got fouled as time expired. Beloit finally tied the game at 27 with 6 minutes to go in the first half.
Kaitlin Davis (Platte City, Mo.) converted on an old fashioned three point play. The rest of the first half was back-and-fourth with the Bucs taking a four point, 40-36 lead into the break.
With Kalk on the bench in foul trouble to start the half, the Bucs needed to find offense else where.
Hannah Welte (Clinton, Wis.) went to work, scoring six of the Bucs eight points in the first five minutes of the quarter. A jumper from
Hailey Johnson at the 4:13 mark gave the Bucs a one point 48-47 lead. Beloit outscored Knox by two over the remaining minutes to take a three point lead, 56-53 into the final quarter. In the fourth, Kalk scored eight of her sixteen points, shutting the door each time Knox tried to come back.
Leading the Bucs with a career-high off the bench was
Hailey Johnson (South Milwaukee, Wis.). Johnson scored 21 points, dished out four assists and grabbed two rebounds. Welte followed with 19 points on 50% shooting from deep and 100% shooting from the charity stripe. Welte secured eight boards in the effort. Kalk recorded her second double-double of the season, posting16 points and 12 rebounds. Davis also recorded a career-high night with ten points, eight boards and five assists.
The Buccaneers stay home to host the Grinnell Pioneers on Wednesday, February 14th. Tip off is set for 7:30pm.
