Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Pushes Closer to MWC Tournament Berth

BELOIT, Wis.- Faced with the task of winning out and needing other pieces to fall, the Beloit College Women's basketball team is doing their part in making that happen. Last night the Buccaneers (11-13, 8-7 MWC) served up their second upset in as many games. The Bucs rallied from a slow start in which the fell behind 0-6 to start the game to defeat Grinnell (13-10, 8-7 MWC) 54-52.

After falling behind to start the game, Beloit put together a 12-2 run over the final six minutes of the first quarter. The Pioneers woke up in the second quarter, outscoring the Bucs 23-14. The Buccaneers came out of the locker room rejuvenated. Not only did they provide more offense but their defense combined with abysmal shooting over the next ten minutes gave the Bucs back the lead, 39-37. In the third quarter, Grinnell shot 0% from both the field and deep, only converting on six free throws. Over the final quarter, Beloit couldn't pull away by more than four points. With twelve seconds remaining, Elizabeth Kalk (Clinton, Wis.) buried two free throws to give the Bucs a four point lead. A foul on a three pointer with three seconds on the clock, put a Pioneer on the line to shoot three and cut the BC lead to one 53-52. Kalk made one of two free throws with under a second to go to seal the victory for the Bucs.

Four Buccaneers finished with double-figure scoring numbers. Kalk led with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Off the bench, Hailey Johnson (South Milwaukee, Wis.) recorded 12 points, four rebounds, one block and one steal. Hannah Welte (Clinton, Wis.) and Johanna McNair (Fishers, Ind.) both scored ten points. Welte also secured eight boards, three steals and two assists. McNair grabbed five rebounds.

The Bucs close out the regular season on Saturday at Lake Forest College. Tip off in Lake Forest, Ill. is set for 3pm.
