KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Beloit College Softball team continued play at THE Spring Games this morning with games against The College of Wooster and Haverford College. Despite dropping both games, the Bucs bats came alive on day two. Beloit dropped the first game 4-6 and second 11-5.
Game 1 vs Wooster:
The day started rough for the Buccaneers (1-4, 0-0 MWC). After plating one run in the top of the first, they gave up four runs in the bottom of the 1st. After two shutout innings for both teams, Beloit answered with three straight singles from
Kaylee Witte (Poplar Grove, IL),
Allison Olson (Sandwich, IL) and
Siddalee Meyers (Orfordville, Wis.).
Isabel Johnson (Austin, Texas) hit a hard grounder to the shortstop, bringing one run around but cut down Olson at second for the first out of the inning. Another hit to the infield cut down Johnson at second. A strike out ended the threat of anymore Buc runs. Wooster added one more in the bottom of the fourth.
Angela Donath (Wausau, Wis.) tripled to right field with two outs in the top of the fifth and came around to score on a Witte single. Wooster extended their lead to three in the bottom of the sixth. After two quick outs to start the top of the seventh, Donath singled to left field and moved to third on another Witte single to right center. Olson hit the Bucs third straight single to score Donath but the scoring chances ended there.
Game 2 vs Haverford:
The Bucs' pitching struggled in game two, giving up eight runs in the first two innings. In the bottom of the fourth,
Jessalyn Coppe (Niles, IL) led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A productive ground out to second by
Briana Arteaga (Covina, Calif.) moved Coppe 60 feet from home. Donath hit a single to center to bring in Coppe. An error from the HC catcher moved Donath into scoring position but an infield ground out ended the scoring threat. Haverford got the run back in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 9-1. The Bucs' offense produced a huge bottom of the fourth Olson led off with a single through the left side. Meyers reached on a Fielder's choice that cut Olson down at second.
Stella Lutes grounded out to the first basemen but pushed Meyers into scoring position. Johnson reached on an error by the shortstop that pushed Meyers to third. Johnson then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Coppe walked to load the bases before
Jocelyn Jordan doubled down the left field line to drive in Meyers and Johnson. Arteaga singled to drive in the Bucs' fourth run and third of the inning. Jordan came home on a fielding error by the third basemen to be Beloit's fifth and final run of the game.
The Buccaneer's get a much needed day off tomorrow and return to the field on Wednesday against Simpson College and Bowdoin College. First pitch against Simpson in set for 10 am and Bowdoin is set for 3:15 pm.
