O'Leary and the Bucs' Win in Walk Off Fashion Against Yellow Jackets

AUBURNDALE, FL. - In an action packed morning for the Beloit College Baseball team, they needed all nine innings to secure the victory over the UW-Superior Yellow Jackets on day 4 of the RussMatt Invitational. Beloit (4-3, 0-0 MWC) defeated the Yellow Jackets 3-2 in walk off fashion.

After two quick defensive errors in the top of the first two innings for the Bucs', they settled in and starting pitcher Caleb Lasher (Albuquerque, N.M.) threw six and a third scoreless innings, only giving up four hits. BC struck first, in the bottom of the sixth after Matt O'Leary (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) walked and stole second. He moved over to third on a Connor Vogel (Palmdale, Calif.) infield ground out. Brett Kiger (Beloit, Wis.) hit a deep enough fly ball out to right field to allow O'Leary to tag and score. The Bucs' led 1-0 heading into the seventh inning. Following two straight UWS singles, Micah Wilk (Martinez, Calif.) replaced Lasher and quickly secured the second out of the inning. Superior (5-4) plated two runs off a double down the left field line.

Needing to answer, Seth Brankey (Salem, Wis.) stepped in to pinch hit with one out in the bottom of the seventh. He singled to left center. Pinch Runner Brody Bremer (Mesa, Ariz.) then stole second, putting himself in scoring position. Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and O'Leary both drew walks to load the bases with still only one out. Vogel flew out to right field but Bremer was quick enough to beat the throw. With the score knotted at 2, the Buccaneers' held UWS scoreless in the top of both the eighth and ninth innings. Three straight outs in the bottom half of the eighth left Beloit looking to walk the game off in the bottom of the ninth. After a lead off strikeout, Tyler White drew a walk and was replaced on the bases by Ryan Kopp. Kopp advanced to second on a balk. Alport double to right center but Kopp was cut down at home on a very close call. With two out and a runner on second, O'Leary hit a line shot to center that dropped in allowing Alport to beat out the throw at the plate to give BC the 3-2 win.

The Buccaneers' have a much deserved off day tomorrow and return to action on Thursday March 14th at 8:45 am CT against Greenville University.
