CLERMONT, FL.- The Beloit College Softball team ended their time in the Sunshine State today with games against Simpson College and Plymouth State University. In game one against Simpson, the Buccaneers fell 4-1. In game two against the Panthers, they battled but ultimately fell 10-11 in nine innings.
Game 1
The Bucs got on the board first, scoring in the bottom of the first.
Lylah Murrah (North Pole, AK) reached on an error by the second basemen and stole second to move into scoring position.
Briana Arteaga (Covina, Calif.) moved her with a sacrifice bunt.
Angela Donath (Wausau, Wis.) singled to the second basemen to score Murrah from third. Springfield took the lead in the top of the third, plating two runs. SC extended their lead again in the top of the sixth, extending their lead to 4-1.
Game 2
Murrah once again started the rally right off the bat for the Bucs. To lead off the game she hit a shot to right field for a triple and came around to score when the ball was mishandled by the second basemen. Arteaga singled to left, stole second and pushed the Bucs' lead to two when she scored on a single to left center from
Siddalee Meyers (Orfordville, Wis.). Holding the Panther scoreless in their first two innings, Beloit once again looked to build on their lead.
Sydney Harbison (Beloit, Wis.) led off the inning with a walk.
Hannah Beran (Calendonia, Ill.) laid down the sacrifice bunt to push Harbison to second. She advanced to third on a wild pitch. With a runner 60 feet from home,
Paloma Reyes (Beloit, Wis.) singled to right center to increase the lead to 3-0. PSU tied the game in the bottom of the second and took the lead in the bottom of the third. Beloit immediately answered in the top of the 4th. Arteaga walked and Donath laid down a bunt single.
Allison Olson (Sandwich, IL) grounded out to the pitcher but the runners advanced following an error. Meyers once again came up in a big spot, collecting two RBIs from a single to left center. In the bottom of the 4th, the Panthers answered by taking the lead back, 6-5.
With the next two innings scoreless for both teams, Beloit tied the game at six in the top of the seventh. Meyers reached on an error by the short stop,
Stella Lutes (Riverside, IL) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Meyers to second. Meyers moved another 60 feet on a passed ball and came home to score on a Harbison sacrifice fly to center.
In extras with a runner placed on second, Reyes laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Beran to third. Murrah was hit by the pitch and stole second. Arteaga walked to load the bases. Donath singled to score Beran from third. Meyers hit an infield single to score Murrah. With the bases loaded, Lutes walked to bring in Arteaga for the Bucs' third run of the inning and ninth of the game. Harbison singled to right field to score Donath. The inning ended when Meyers got caught between third and home.
PSU rallied and tied the game in the bottom of the eight. The Bucs' came up empty in the top of the ninth, allowing the Panthers to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth with a squeeze bunt.
Beloit concludes their trip down south with a record of 1-9. They regroup and return to action on March 20th in Rockford against Rockford University. Games are set for 3 & 5 pm. The games will be played at SportsScore 1 in Rockford.
