JACKSONVILLE, IL. - The Beloit College Baseball team wrapped up their season series against Illinois College this afternoon. After a double-header yesterday, the series was tied at two, and this afternoon's game would prove to be an important one. The Buccaneers (17-9, 10-5 MWC) led 9-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Blue Boys (17-11, 4-8 MWC) rallied to score six in the last frame to send it to extras and walk it off in the bottom of the tenth.
Spreading out their scoring, Beloit plated runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth. With
Connor Vogel (Palmdale, Calif.) on after a single to center,
Brett Kiger (Beloit, Wis.) launched his league-leading 14th home run of the season to give the Buccaneers a 2-0 lead. The long balls didn't stop there. Kiger then led off the top of the sixth with another solo shot. After
Evan Zenger (Burr Ridge, Ill.) walked and moved to second on a wild pitch,
Miles Souza (Carpinteria, Calif.) joined the party with a two-run bomb of his own.
In the top of the seventh,
Matt O'Leary (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) led off the inning with a walk. Vogel reached on a fielder's choice and an error by the IC third basemen allowed O'Leary to move over to third. Beloit's sixth run came when O'Leary took off for home on a wild pitch. Looking for more insurance, the Bucs added two more in the top of the ninth to make it 8-2. Vogel walked and moved to second on a Kiger single.
Brody Bremer (Mesa, Ariz.) came in to pinch run for Kiger. Zenger flied out to center but moved both runners up 90 feet. Souza collected another RBI with a single that scored Vogel.
Jacopo "JT" Tamburini (Bologna, Italy) grounded out to the second basemen but scored Bremer from third. The Blue Boys rallied for six runs in the bottom of the ninth and held the Bucs scoreless in the top of the tenth. IC walked it off in the bottom of the tenth.
Kaiya Nishino (Seattle, Wash.) got the start for Beloit, going 4.2 innings before being lifted for
Harvey Pena (Riverside, Calif.). Pena went 3.1 innings and
Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) closed out the final 1.1 innings.
The Buccaneers will look to bounce back when they host the MWC leading Lawrence University Vikings on Tuesday, April 16th. First pitch for game one at the Ballpark at Strong Stadium is set for 1 pm.
