ROCK ISLAND, Ill - Yesterday and Friday the Beloit College Track and Field teams competed at the Augustana College Meet of Champions. The Buccaneers faced some of their toughest competition from some of the best schools in the Midwest. Holding their own, they took home five top five finishes including one first place winner.
Candis Damtse (Accra, Ghana) highlighted the women's side, taking the top spot in the women's 400 meter dash, toeing the line in 59.67 seconds.
Alayna Furch (Saint Charles, Mo.) placed eleventh in the 400 with a time of 1:02.89. In the 200 meter dash, Damtse finished in eighth, crossing the line in 25.70 seconds. The 4x100 relay team comprised of Damtse, Furch,
Hannah Welte (Clinton, Wis.) and
Jaeonie Echols (Kansas City, MO) took home seventh, running a 51.26. Wrapping up the track events was
Carter Browne (Hornell, N.Y.) in the 5000 meter run. Browne finished in tenth, running a 21.07.74, marking her fastest time this season.
In the field, Elizabeth Kalk (Clinton, Wis.) took home a top ten finish, a top 15 and a top twenty finish. Clearing 1.47m she placed seventh in the high jump and reaching 4.74 meters gave her 12th in the long jump. Her Javelin toss of 26.88 m was enough for 16th place. Naomee Casey vaulted to 3.14m for a 12th place finish in the women's pole vault. Two Buccaneers threw their way to top fifteen in the shot put. Kit Kronberger (Wausau, Wis.) threw a 10.17 to finish in 14th and just behind her was Hadja Bayo (Round Rock, Texas) with a throw of 10.14 meter.
For the men, Josh Yearby (West Park, FL) ran a 10.98 second 100 meter dash to finish in seventh. Alexandre Atou (Abomey Calavi, Benin) placed in the top ten in the 400 with a 51.01 second run for ninth place. Nate Otis (Shoreview, Minn.) and Quinten Lottig (Lake Geneva, Wis.) placed in the 400 meter hurdles. Otis finished in fifth with a run of 57.54 seconds, finishing ten spots behind him was Lottig at 1:02.97. Both the A and B 4x100 relay teams finished back to back, taking ninth and tenth place respectively. In ninth was the A squad made up of Ayouba Sumoaro (Las Vegas, NV), Daniel DeGeorge (Bettendorf, Iowa), Otis and Yearby. That group crossed the line in 44.49 seconds. The B group with Kevon Mills (Key West, FL), Azeez Ganiyu (Beloit, Wis.), Lotting and Izzy Zewdie (Las Vegas, Nev.) toed the line in 44.98 seconds.
Highlighting the men's field events was Caden Anderson (Westmont, Ill.) in javelin. Anderson grabbed a third place finish with a throw of 47.34 meters. Diontia Charles (Riverdale, Ill.) and Joshua Martinez Marte (Beloit, Wis.) took fifth in their events, with Charles reaching 1.84 meters in the high jump and Martinez Marte tossing a throw of 13.94 meters in the shot put. Martiez Marte added a 19th place finish in the discus, reaching 42.44 meters. Mills secured two top ten finishes in his jumping events. He leaped to 6.26 meters, enough for sixth in the men's long jump and hit 1.79 meters for tenth in the high jump.
The Buccaneers head up to De Pere, Wis. next weekend for the Green Knight Invite at St. Norbert College. The Green Knight Invite is set for Saturday the 27th with throwing events starting at 9:30 am.
