IRVINE, Calif. – For the past two days, the Anteater Stadium at UC Irvine played host to the prestigious Steve Scott Invitational, drawing elite talent from across the country. Among the sea of Division I powerhouses and elite track clubs, three Beloit College men's track and field athletes delivered a series of standout performances, proving they could compete with the best on the West Coast.
Leading the charge for the Buccaneers were three key athletes who left their marks across the sprint, hurdle, and throwing disciplines.
Junior Josh Yearby (Hollywood, FL) represented the Bucs in the premier speed events of the day. In the Men's 100 Meter Dash, Yearby clocked a blistering 10.80 seconds (+2.4 wind), holding his own in a massive field of 55 sprinters. He followed that performance with a strong showing in the Men's 200 Meter Dash, crossing the finish line in 22.00 seconds to take 20th place overall in a highly competitive field.
Senior Nate Otis (Shoreview, Minn.) took to the track for the Men's 400 Meter Hurdles, at an event known for its grueling demands. Otis rose to the occasion in Heat 1, finishing with an impressive time of 53.05 seconds. His performance earned him a 4th-place finish overall, coming in just behind scholarship athletes from Nevada State and ahead of several Division I competitors from the Big West conference.
Junior Joshua Martinez (Beloit, Wis.) was the workhorse for the Buccaneers in the field, competing in three separate throwing events. His top performance of the day came in the Men's Discus Throw, where he launched a massive toss of 52.21 meters. This mark was good enough for 8th place overall, beating out several throwers from UC Santa Barbara and Cal St. Fullerton.
Martinez also showcased his versatility in the Men's Shot put, recording a distance of 14.49 meters, placing 19th. In Men's Hammer Throw, he finished with a mark of 46.41 meters, placing 15th.
The Steve Scott Invitational served as a high-level barometer for the Beloit program. With Yearby providing the speed, Otis mastering the hurdles, and Martinez providing the power in the field, the Buccaneers demonstrated that the "Gold and Blue" belongs on the national stage.
This was a final tuneup for these three as they head into the Midwest Conference Championships next weekend hoping for multiple podium finishes.
