BELOIT, WIs. - The Beloit College Softball team opened MWC play today when they hosted the Cornell College Rams in an afternoon double header. The Buccaneers (3-17, 0-2 MWC) fought hard in both games. Between the two teams and two games, only a total of seven runs came in to score. The Rams (8-5, 2-0 MWC) capitalized on opportunities and took both games, winning 4-1 in game one and 2-0 in game two.
In game one, after three and a half scoreless innings, Beloit got on the board first.
Briana Arteaga (Covina, Calif.) reached after an error by the center fielder. An infield single from
Angela Donath (Wausau, Wis.) put runners on first and second.
Rachel Overocker (Tinley Park, IL) hit a sacrifice to move the runners sixty feet.
Kaylee Witte (Poplar Grove, IL) grounded out to second but pushed Arteaga across. The Rams responded with runs in the top of the fifth and sixth to take a 4-1 victory in game one.
Witte went the distance on the mound, striking out three. Donath went 2-3 at the plate with a stolen base.
In game two, the Rams wasted no time getting on the board, pushing a run across in the top of the first. They doubled their lead in the top of the third for the final run of the game. Beloit struggled to string anything together, only mustering up five hits in seven innings.
Siddalee Meyers (Orfordville, Wis.) went 2-4 in the game with a double. Starting pitcher
Samantha Friedrichsohn (Waukesha, WI) went five innings for the Bucs. She recorded two strikeouts.
Helena Harrison (Chapel Hill, N.C.) came in in relief, giving up just two hits.
Beloit faces a quick turnaround as they are set to host the Grinnell College Pioneers tomorrow, weather permitting. The games are set for 1 & 3 pm tomorrow at Strong Complex Softball Fields.
