BELOIT, Wis. - This afternoon the Beloit College Women's lacrosse team kicked off NACC play when they hosted the Edgewood College Eagles. In a game that saw back and forth goals, runs and a late rally, the Buccaneers (4-4, 0-1 NACC) fell to the Eagles (5-6, 1-0 NACC) by the final score of 13-11.
Over the first half of the first quarter, both teams traded goals.
Maggie Mudd (St. Charles, Mo.) opened all scoring just a minute into the game. Edgewood answered just a minute later.
Maya DeGeorge (Grand Junction, Colo.) gave Beloit a 2-1 lead at the 12:05 mark with her first of three straight goals for the Bucs.
Johanna McNair (Fishers, Ind.) assisted on DeGeorge's goal. Two minutes later, DeGeorge found the back of the net again. to give BC a 3-2 lead. Mudd assisted on the goal. Her final goal of the first quarter came at the 8:08 mark when McNair found her for a quick shot passed the Eagles' goalie. DeGeorge's third goal sparked a 3-0 run by the Bucs to close out the first fifteen minutes. McNair netted her first goal with 7:14 left. DeGeorge assisted on the goal. Mudd gave Beloit a three goal, 6-3 lead with just over a minute left.
Thirty seconds into the 2nd quarter, DeGeorge recorded her fourth goal of the game. With under five minutes left in the first half, Edgewood had pulled withing two, 7-5. McNair scored back-to-back goals to close out the half and put Beloit up 9-5. It looked like the Bucs would take a four goal advantage into the break but the Eagles scored with just seconds remaining.
Four goals were scored in the third quarter, all by the Eagles. By the start of the fourth quarter, they had taken a 10-9 lead and most of the momentum. DeGeorge and
Cassidy Felix (Bellflower, Calif.) closed out the scoring for the Bucs in the fourth. DeGeorge scored at the 11:49 mark with Felix burying her first goal of the game at the 10:48 mark to put the Bucs up one, 11-10. Edgewood closed out the game on a 3-0 run to secure the 13-11 victory.
The Bucs' head out of conference for their next game. They will host Dominican University of California on Monday at 5 pm at Strong Stadium.
