BELOIT, Wis. - The Beloit College baseball team closed out the weekend series against Knox College this afternoon with a 4-2 win to sweep the series. The Buccaneers (16-6, 8-2 MWC) got an outstanding outing from starting pitcher
Caleb Lasher (Albuquerque, N.M.) and four shutout innings from
Miles Souza (Carpinteria, Calif.) to stop the Prairie Fire (5-12, 0-6 MWC) from making the game any closer.
Unlike the first two games of the series, it took Beloit three innings to plate their first run. Lead off hitter,
Jacopo "JT" Tamburini (Bologna, Italy) reached via an error and quickly moved over to second on a wild pitch.
Tyler White (Cedarburg, Wis.) walked and the second passed ball of the inning moved both runners ninety feet. Both
Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and
Matt O'Leary (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) walked. O'Leary's walk brought Tamburini in to score.
Connor Vogel (Palmdale, Calif.) hit a single to right field that scored White from third. With just one out,
Brett Kiger (Beloit, Wis.) flied out to right but deep enough to score Alport and give the Bucs a 3-0 lead. Knox got a spark with a lead off solo home run in the top of the fourth, but couldn't string any more runs together that inning.
Beloit's final run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning. O'Leary led off the inning with a double to right center and came in to score when Kiger singled up the middle. Kiger was cut down trying to stretch his single into a double. The Prairie Fire started a rally in the top of the ninth but fell short when they were only able to plate one run. Beloit took the game 4-2.
Lasher went five innings, striking out four and giving up just five hits. Souza earned the save going four innings with just two hits.
The Buccaneers will host the Maroons of the University of Chicago on Wednesday, April 10th. First pitch from The Ballpark at Strong Stadum is set for 1 pm.
