Buccaneers Compete at Battle in the Bluffs, Men Take Third, Women Place Fourth

DUBUQUE, IA. - Yesterday the Beloit College Track and Field teams traveled to the University of Dubuque to compete at the Battle in the Bluffs. The men finished third while the women took home fourth. 

Men: 
The highlights on the track for the Bucs came from the 4x400 relay team of Izzy Zewdie (Las Vegas, Nev.), Alexandre Atou (Abomey Calavi, Benin), Nate Otis (Shoreview, Minn.), Daniel DeGeorge (Bettendorf, Iowa), who took second with a 3:22.14. This comes in as the fastest time in the conference by over two seconds. Individually, Otis placed 4th in the 400m hurdles, toeing the line in 55.04 seconds and 7th in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.06. His 400m time takes over the top spot in the MWC. Following Otis in the 400 m hurdles was Quinten Lottig (Lake Geneva, Wis.). Lottig took 7th, crossing the line in 59.73. The Buccaneer 4x100 relay teams took 5th and 6th. The combination of  Ayouba Sumoaro (Las Vegas, NV), Azeez Ganiyu (Beloit, Wis.), Lottig, Zewdie took 5th place at 43.99 while Josh Yearby (West Park, FL), DeGeorge, Otis, Atou took 6th at 44.24.  In the 100 M, Yearby took 7th place with a time of 11.00 seconds. Atou ran a 49.66 second 400m to take tenth place. Despite finishing tenth, he posted the fastest time in the MWC this season.  Rounding out the running events was Sawyer Wall (Chicago, Ill.) in the 5000 meter run. Wall crossed the line in 17:44.94. 

Beloit saw more success in the field. Kevon Mills (Key West, FL) finished 2nd and 3rd in his two events. In long jump, his 6.89m mark was enough for second and by clearing 1.94 meters in high jump, he took 3rd. Mills' moves into the number two spot in the MWC for high jump and third for long jump. Diontia Charles (Riverdale, Ill.) and Vansh Bhandari (Mangalore, Karnataka, India) finished 6th and 7th in triple jump. Charles jumped 12.39m for 6th while Bhandari hit 11.63 for 7th. In the throws, Joshua Martinez Marte (Beloit, Wis.) threw a 14.49 m shot put for 7th. Caden Anderson (Westmont, Ill.) continued his stellar javelin season by taking second with a toss of 48.87 meters. Charles took fourth, hitting 42.86m


Women: 
For the women, Candis Damtse (Accra, Ghana) and Hannah Welte (Clinton, Wis.) both took home first place finishes. Damtse took 1st in the 400 meter dash, running a 56.88. That takes over as the top time in the MWC this season. She followed that up with a second place finish in the 200, posting a 24.90, also good enough for first in the MWC. Welte took the top spot in the 400 meter hurdles, crossing in 1:07.67 and moving into second in the MWC. Her 17.04 in the 100 meter hurdles put her in 6th place. Highlighting the relays was the 4x400 team made up of Sophia Miller (Salem, Ore.), Damtse, Jaeonie Echols (Kansas City, MO) and Alayna Furch (Saint Charles, Mo.), taking home second at 3:59.60 but moving into first in the MWC. Welte, Ross, Marianna Carus (Ottawa, Ill.) and Niomee Casey (Broken Arrow, Okla) followed in 4th place at 4:34.02. Finally, on the track, the 4x100 team of Darcel Royster (Chicago, Ill.), Echols, Welte and Damtse placed 5th place, toeing the line in 49.80. 

In field events, Welte, Haley Carlin (Sarasota, Fla.) and Naomi Murphy (Dubuque, Iowa) all took top ten finishes. Murphy took seventh in high jump, clearing 1.35m. Carlin took eighth in pole vault when she cleared 2.50 meters. Welte wrapped up her day with a 5th place finish in long jump, hitting 5.08m.   

On Friday and Saturday, the Buccaneers will head to Jacksonville, Ill. and Illinois College for the Midwest Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
