BELOIT, Wis. - The Beloit College Football team hosted the Knox College Priaire Fire this evening for homecoming and Beloiter Days. The Buccaneers (0-2, 0-1) held a late 13-10 lead until the Prairie Fire (2-0, 1-0) drove down the field for a touchdown with under two minutes to go.
In the tail of two offenses, the Buccaneers used the air while the Prairie Fire used the ground. Beloit posted 148 passing yards to just nine for KC. On the flip side, the Prairie Fire tallied 337 rush yards to just 83 for the Bucs.
It took a while for either offense to get moving. On the opening drive, the Buccaneer defense forced a three and out and countered on offense with a six play drive that resulted in a 40-yard field goal by
Rafael Cervantes Jr. (Dallas, TX). The Buccaneers led 3-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.
The first three Prairie Fire drives ended with punts. It wasn't until their fourth possession that they put together a scoring drive. The drive lasted nearly eight and a half minutes and spanned 99 yards.
Over their next three possessions, the Buccaneers were fruitless, trailing the Praire Fire 7-3 heading into halftime.
Gavin Thorpe (Homestead, FL) took the second half opening kick off 26 yards to start the Buccaneer drive at their own 35. The Bucs constructed a drive that took up four minutes and forty yards. Once again, it ended with a Cervantes field goal. This time for 42-yards. Defensively, they forced a three and out on the following KC possession to swing the momentum back in their direction.
AJ Fitzpatrick (Chicago, IL) gave Beloit great field position with a 46-yard return coupled with a KC penalty that moved the ball to the Knox 7-yard line.
Jacob Shafer (Dixon, IL) then found Fitzpatrick in the end zone to give Beloit the lead back, 13-7 with under eight to go in the 3rd.
Knox cut the lead back to three the following possession when they converted a 30-yard field goal. The third quarter ended with the Bucs leading, 13-10.
On their second drive of the final quarter, the Prairie Fire constructed a nine play, 83-yard drive to take a 17-13 lead and essentially squash the Buccaneer momentum. With a minute and a half remaining, the Buccaneers needed yards. Four straight incompletions stalled the Bucs and dashed their hopes of a Homecoming victory.
The Buccaneers head out of Beloit for their first road test of the year next Saturday when they head to Grinnell, Iowa to face the Pioneers. Kick off from Rosenbloom Field is set for 1 pm.
