Men's Basketball Unable to Hang On in Second Half Against Vikings

APPLETON, WI – The Beloit College Buccaneers fought hard but ultimately fell to the Lawrence University Vikings by a final score of 69-57 in a hard-fought battle at Alexander Gym on Tuesday evening. While Beloit showed flashes of strong play, particularly in the first half, they couldn't overcome a determined Lawrence squad that pulled away after halftime.

The Buccaneers (6-13, 2-9 MWC) started the game with purpose. Led by Brian Rusch (Edgerton, Wis.), who would go on to score 13 points, and Jabari Scuefield's (Hazel Crest, Ill.) 17, Beloit's offense looked sharp as the team headed into the break only down by 5 (37-32). However, despite their early success, Beloit struggled to find consistency in the second half, particularly on the offensive end. Their shooting percentages dropped dramatically, leading to their undoing.

Beloit started the game with 12 of 27 (44.4%) from the field with 3 of 7 (42.9%) from beyond the arc, but the second half saw that percentage drop to just 8 of 29 (27.6%) from the field with 2 of 13 (15.4%) from beyond the arc. While Rusch's and Scuefield's contributions were significant, the rest of the team struggled to make shots, making it increasingly difficult to keep pace with the Vikings. On the rebounding end, Beloit was not able to convert second chance opportunities and ultimately lost that battle 5-0.

Despite the loss, several Buccaneers turned in solid performances. Scuefield once again carried the scoring load for Beloit, finishing with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. Rusch contributed 13 points, and Azeez Ganiyu (Beloit, Wis.), while scoring only 8, had 7 rebounds. However, a high number of turnovers ultimately cost the Buccaneers, as Lawrence was able to score 18 points off of turnovers.

The Buccaneers will look to bounce back next week. They host Ripon on Wednesday, February 5th. Tip off from Flood Arena is set for 7:30 pm.
