APPLETON, WI – The Beloit College women's basketball team faced a tough road test against Lawrence University this evening, ultimately falling 64-37. The Buccaneers (2-18, 1-10 MWC) displayed resilience and glimpses of their potential, particularly on the defensive end.
Although the shooting percentages for Beloit – 18.2% from the field and 26.1% from beyond the arc – don't tell the whole story, the Bucs demonstrated a strong defensive presence, forcing the Vikings (14-5, 8-2 MWC) into 16 turnovers.
Hailey Johnson (South Milwaukee, Wis.) led the charge for Beloit, displaying a well-rounded effort with a team-high 9 points and 5 rebounds. While the team struggled overall from the field, she was able to create positive opportunities for the Buccaneers. The game also gave several players valuable experience against a tough opponent, valuable as they look towards future competitions. Bailey Darneal (Colorado Springs, CO) provided a spark off the bench for the Bucs, putting up eight points and corralling six rebounds.
Beloit was able to make strides on the boards as well, as the team grabbed 40 rebounds, only slightly less than Lawrence's 46. Their effort on the defensive glass limited Lawrence's second chance opportunities. While they had a tough time getting inside, holding Lawrence to 41% field goal shooting was a positive for the Bucs as well.
The Buccaneers have the weekend off before hosting league-leading Ripon at Flood Arena on February 5th. Tip off is set for 5:30 pm.
