GRINNELL, IA – Beloit College's women's soccer team faced a tough challenge on the road today, ultimately falling 3-1 to Grinnell College in a hard-fought match at Springer Field. Despite the loss, the Buccaneers (2-10-2, 1-4-1 MWC) showed tremendous resilience, especially in the second half, and managed to put a goal on the board in the closing minutes.
The first half saw the Pioneers (5-5-4, 2-1-2 MWC) establish an early lead, netting the first goal at the 8:24 mark. The Pioneers extended their lead to 2-0 with another goal at 18:29. Beloit's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Sophia Dietz (Schaumburg, IL), faced a barrage of shots, with Grinnell recording 10 shots to Beloit's 1 in the first half. Dietz made 3 crucial saves to keep the Buccaneers within striking distance.
As the second half unfolded, Beloit College demonstrated renewed vigor. While Grinnell scored at 68:01 further extending their lead, the Buccaneers refused to yield. Beloit's offensive efforts intensified significantly in the latter half, as evidenced by their 5 shots compared to Grinnell's 3 in the second period.
The persistence paid off dramatically in the final minute of play. At 89:35, Keira Werner (Piper, KS) found the back of the net, scoring the Buccaneers' sole goal of the match. This late-game score was a testament to Beloit's enduring spirit and determination.
Individually, Dietz finished the game with 5 saves, showcasing her skill and commitment between the posts. Werner's goal was a highlight, marking her second goal of the season. Sarah Connors (Paso Robles, CA) also contributed significantly to the offensive push, recording two shots on target.
The Buccaneers are on the road again on Saturday, taking on the Ripon College Red Hawks. Kick off from Hopp Stadium is set for 5 pm.
