BELOIT, WI – In a spirited battle at Flood Arena, the Beloit College Women's Basketball team secured their first victory of the season, defeating Illinois Tech by a final score of 62-50. The game saw the Buccaneers (1-3, 0-0 MWC) maintain a lead through most of the game, fending off several comeback attempts by the Scarlet Hawks (0-3, 0-0 NACC).
Beloit started strong, establishing an early lead in the first quarter. Julia Kennedy (South Milwaukee, WI) kicked off the scoring with a three-pointer, setting the tone for the home team. Key contributions from Hailey Johnson (South Milwaukee, Wis.), who consistently drew fouls and converted free throws, helped Beloit build momentum. Johnson proved to be a pivotal player for Beloit, leading her team in scoring with an impressive 18 points, largely due to her efficiency at the free-throw line (12-14). Her aggressive play and ability to finish around the basket were crucial.
However, Illinois Tech refused to back down, with Berit Rusing (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Grace Goodnough (12 points, 9 rebounds) leading their charge. Rusing, in particular, was instrumental in keeping the Scarlet Hawks in the game with her offensive rebounding and timely layups.
The second quarter saw the Bucs continue to hold a comfortable lead. Brooke Foster (Machesney Park, Ill.) came off the bench to add an offensive spark, contributing 8 points and demonstrating good court vision with 2 assists. Aina Mallorqui (Valls, Spain) also made significant contributions off the bench for Beloit, adding 11 points and showcasing her ability to drive to the basket. The Buccaneers held IIT to just six points in the second frame.
The third quarter saw Illinois Tech attempt to close the gap. Despite Beloit maintaining control, IIT managed to outscore the Buccaneers 13-12 in the period. However, Beloit's strong free-throw shooting, particularly from Johnson and Kennedy, prevented Illinois Tech from fully capitalizing on their offensive efforts. Kaitlin Davis (Platte City, Mo.) provided solid defense with a block and contributed 9 points, while Amaya Bridgewater (Milwaukee, Wis.) added 10 points and 4 rebounds before fouling out.
In the final quarter, Beloit once again asserted their dominance. A crucial three-pointer from Mallorqui and continued strong play from Johnson helped solidify Beloit's lead, despite some late attempts by Illinois Tech. The Buccaneers defense held strong, limiting the Scarlet Hawks to just 12 points in the fourth quarter, ultimately securing the 62-50 victory.
The Buccaneers are back in action on Wednesday, November 19th when they travel to Madison and Edgewood College for a clash with the Eagles. Tip off from the Todd Wehr Edgedome is set for 7pm.
