MOUNT VERNON, Iowa– The Beloit College Buccaneers traveled to Mount Vernon, Iowa, to face off against Cornell College in a hard-fought Midwest Conference clash. Historically good at Cornell, the Buccaneers ended a seven game skid and defeated the Rams with a final score of 67-62. The Buccaneers (7-14, 3-10 MWC) were able to hold off a late surge from the Rams (13-8, 7-5 MWC).
The Bucs showcased a balanced offensive attack, with several players contributing key baskets. Anthony Carter (Greenfield, Wis.) led the team in scoring, displaying his shooting prowess with three three-pointers and a final point total of 21. Azeez Ganiyu (Beloit, Wis.), a key presence in the paint, contributed 6 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Clayton Jenny's (Edgerton, Wis.) three three-pointers added a spark to the Buccaneers' offense.
Beloit established a lead early, holding a consistent advantage throughout much of the first half. The Buccaneers' defensive intensity contributed to Cornell's struggles, forcing turnovers and limiting their scoring opportunities. However, Cornell College chipped away at the lead, and the game remained close down the stretch. Beloit's 90% from the free throw line was their second-highest of the season and a key component of holding on in the second half.
The Buccaneers step out of conference for the final team this season on Tuesday when they host the Maranatha Baptist Sabercats. Tip off from Flood Arena is set for 7 pm.
