RANTOUL, Ill. - The Beloit College Baseball team came away with two wins this afternoon. The Buccaneers (2-0, 0-0 MWC) defeated Augustana (1-2, 0-0 CCIW) 5-2 in game one, 5-2Â and defeated Wisconsin Lutheran (1-1, 0-0 NACC) by a convincing score of 18-4 in seven innings.Â
Game 1 vs Augustana (W, 5-2)
In a tightly contested match up Beloit edged out Augustana (III.) with a final score of 5-2. The game remained close throughout, with Beloit initially breaking the ice in the 2nd inning thanks to an RBI single by Nolan Tomsyck (Muskego, Wis), driving in Blake Nelson (Monument, CO.). The Vikings responded in the 5th, tying the game off of a passed ball.
However, Beloit surged ahead in the 7th with a pivotal at bat from Miles Souza (Carpinteria, Calif.) who doubled, driving in Aiden Wood (Chandler, Ariz.), Jacopo "JT" Tamburini (Bologna, Italy), and Connor Vogel (Palmdale, Calif.). Followed by a single from Seth Brankey (Salem, Wis.) that scored Souza.
Augustana managed a late-inning response when McGinnis hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Mosele to score in the bottom of the 7th, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
Aiden Phipps (Simi Valley, Calif.) started strong for Beloit, while Harvey Pena (Riverside, Calif.) closed out the game, and DeMarlie took the loss for the Vikings. In the end, despite Augustana out hitting Beloit, Beloit capitalized on key moments to secure the 5-2 victory.
Game 2 vs WLC (W, 18-4 - 7 Innings)
In their second and final game of the day, the Buccaneers dominated the Wisconsin Lutheran Vikings in a high-scoring affair, securing an 18-4 victory.The game began with Wis. Lutheran taking an early lead, with a two-run homer in the first inning.Â
However, Beloit began to chip away in the bottom of the third when Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) reached on an error allowing Brankey to score. The floodgates opened in the bottom of the fifth, starting with Alport grounding out to score Riley Ponio (Morris, Ill.). Souza then singled to left filed, bringing in Tomsyck. Sophomore transfer Jordan Rosenberg (Leawood, KS) cleared the bases with a three-run home run. To cap off the inning, Poinio hit another three-run homer.
Beloit continued their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the sixth, with Souza singling to center, driving in Tomsyck and Alport.. After some base running and errors, Connor Vogel (Palmdale, Calif.) scored on a passed ball, followed by Nelson grounding out to score Wood.The inning continued with Alport drawing a walk for an RBI and Tomsyck adding two more RBIs with a single. Finally, Vogel singled to bring in the last run of the game, making the final score 18-4.Â
The Buccaneers wrap up the weekend tomorrow against Northland College. First pitch is set for 2:30 pm.Â
