Baseball Edges Out Polar Bears for First Win in Florida

DAVENPORT, FL – In a high-scoring affair under the Florida sun, the Beloit College Buccaneers emerged victorious against the Ohio Northern Polar Bears with a final score of 9-8. The match up saw both teams trade blows throughout the game, with the Buccaneers (4-3, 0-0 MWC) ultimately holding on for the win.

The Buccaneers showcased their offensive firepower, racking up 13 hits. Leading the charge was Connor Vogel (Palmdale, Calif.), who went 3-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBIs. Key contributions also came from Miles Souza (Carpinteria, Calif.), who drove in 3 runs, and Brendan Meyers (Palatine, Ill.), who had a critical RBI single. The team also showed aggressive base-running, with Brody Bremer (Mesa, Ariz.) swiping a bag.

Ohio Northern (5-3, 0-0 OAC) also had strong offensive showings. Stechschu hit a home run, and Armstrong had a three-RBI double in the 4th inning. However, their efforts weren't enough to overcome Beloit's consistent offensive output.

After starting the game with Caleb Lasher (Albuquerque, N.M.) on the mound, the Bucs turned to Micah Wilk (Martinez, Calif.), and then Harvey Pena (Riverside, Calif.). Pena earned the win, pitching 4 innings and allowing only 1 run.

The game featured several dramatic shifts in momentum. After allowing 7 runs in the first four innings, the Beloit offense exploded for 4 runs in the 5th and 1 in the 6th. After Ohio Northern tied the game in the 7th, the Buccaneers scored 2 more runs to take the lead and ultimately win. The Polar Bears battled back scoring one run in the bottom of the 9th, but fell short in the comeback.

The Buccaneers are back in action tomorrow morning against the College of St. Scholastica. First pitch from Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven is set for 10 am CT.
