Beloit, WI – In their first games back from Florida, the Beloit College softball team hosted the Regents of Rockford University. Rockford defeated Beloit by a score of 10-1 in game one, and again in game two, 8-4.
Game 1:
The Buccaneers (0-14, 0-0 MWC) faced challenges both offensively and defensively. A standout moment for Beloit came from Briana Arteaga (Covina, Calif.) who went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.
The Bucs lone run came in the third inning when Arteaga laid down a bunt with Angela Donath (Wausau, Wis.) on third. RU's pitcher fielded the ball and tossed it to the catcher who couldn't cleanly apply the tag.
On the pitching front, Samantha Friedrichsohn (Waukesha, WI) took the loss for Beloit, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing 4 runs. Avary Briggs (Albany, Wis.) came in relief. Bella Lima earned the win for Rockford, pitching a complete game and allowing 1 run.
Game 2:
Game two saw flashes of brilliance from several Beloit players. Senior shortstop Donath led the charge, going 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Donath also showcased her speed with a stolen base. Kaitlyn Nicholson (Roscoe, Ill) also contributed offensively with two hits and an RBI, demonstrating Beloit's potential for a strong offensive core. Avary Briggs (Albany, Wis.) added an RBI.
The Buccaneers got on the board in the second inning when Donath singled home Joey Meyers (Orfordville, Wis.), who had stolen second after entering the game to pinch run. Nicholson followed with a single, driving in Donath, narrowing Rockford's early lead. Beloit continued to chip away at the deficit, adding two more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Donath's RBI triple, which brought Hannah Beran (Calendonia, Ill.) in.
Unfortunately for Beloit, Rockford's offense proved too potent. Rockford's Vandeberg led the charge, blasting a home run in the 1st inning, adding 2 RBI's. They followed up with 3 runs in the 2nd inning, and 3 runs in the 6th inning.
On the pitching side,Helena Harrison (Chapel Hill, N.C.) started for Beloit, while Briggs stepped in to assist, with a collective 3 strikeouts.
The Buccaneers have a quick turn around before hosting the Elmhurst University Bluejays tomorrow. Tomorrow's doubleheader from the Strong Complex Softball Field is set for 12 pm and 2 pm.
