Softball Unable to Keep Up with Carthage

ROSCOE, Ill. - The Beloit College softball team hosted the Carthage College Firebirds at Swanson Park this evening. The game, originally scheduled for Sunday, changed dates and location due to weather and lack of lights at the Strong Complex Softball Field. The Buccaneers (2-18, 0-0 MWC) looked to build of their success earlier this week, but the Firebirds (13-5, 0-0 CCIW) had other plans, taking both games. Carthage defeated the Bucs 11-0 (5 innings) in game one and 9-1 (6 innings) in game two.

Game 1:
Offensively, the Bucs managed to record three hits against Carthage's pitching staff. Angela Donath (Wausau, Wis.), Kaitlyn Nicholson (Roscoe, Ill), and Siddalee Meyers (Orfordville, Wis.) each notched a hit. Meyers recorded the first Beloit hit in the bottom of the second with a single up the middle. Their final two hits came back-to-back in the bottom of the third when Donath singled up the middle and Nicholson followed her with a single up the middle of her own.

The Buccaneers had action on the bases in the bottom of the fifth when Donath and Hannah Beran (Calendonia, Ill.) drew back-to-back walks but were left stranded.

On the pitching side, Samantha Friedrichsohn (Waukesha, WI) took the loss for Beloit, pitching two innings and allowing eight earned runs. Avary Briggs (Albany, Wis.) entered in relief and pitched three innings.

Game 2:
Offensively, the Bucs managed only three hits, with the lone run coming on a solo home run from Lylah Murrah (North Pole, AK) in the second inning. The long ball marked the first of her career. Donath, Nicholson, and Allie Gustafson (Beloit, Wis.) also contributed with a hit each. The team struggled at the plate, striking out five times and leaving five runners on base.

On the mound, Briggs took the loss for Beloit, allowing 9 runs on 16 hits.

Carthage's offense was led by Gwen Hendrick, who went 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Olivia Hristov also had a strong performance, homering and driving in three runs. Hristov also earned the win for Carthage on the mound, pitching a complete game and allowing just three hits and one run while striking out five.

The Buccaneers are back in action tomorrow in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Their doubleheader against Carroll is slated for 12 and 2 pm. It marks their first of six straight road games.
