Baseball Drops Close Game to Webster on Opening Day in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.  – The Beloit College Buccaneers (3-1, 0-0 MWC) suffered their first loss of the season in a tightly contested match against the Webster University Gorloks (6-4) on Saturday. Despite a strong offensive showing, the Bucs ultimately fell short, losing 6-4 in a game played at Winter Haven, Florida.

Beloit's offense was led by some solid hitting throughout the lineup. Aiden Wood (Chandler, Ariz.) had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) also had a strong game, going 3-for-4 and stealing a base. Blake Nelson (Monument, CO.) collected an RBI single.

The Buccaneers took an early lead with two runs in the second and third innings, but Webster responded with two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to regain the lead. The Bucs managed to narrow the gap with a run in the seventh, but an unearned run for Webster in the eighth inning sealed the victory for the Gorloks.

Aiden Phipps (Simi Valley, Calif.) started and pitched five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Erick Tiegs (Waukesha, Wis.) and Maddon McArthur (Redondo Beach, Calif.) pitched in relief, but couldn't keep the Gorloks from adding to their lead.

The Bucs are back in action tomorrow morning against UW-Superior. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is slated for 8:45 am CT at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida.
