APPLETON, Wis. - Beloit College athletes showcased their talent and determination at the 2025 Midwest Conference Track & Field Championships held at Lawrence University from May 9-10, with both the men's and women's teams securing 7th place overall. The men's team garnered 49 points, while the women's team finished with 37 points, highlighted by several standout individual performances.
Men
The Beloit men were spearheaded by a phenomenal showing from Nate Otis (Shoreview, Minn.). The versatile athlete was crowned Conference Champion in the Men's 400 Meter Hurdles, blazing to victory in 53.01 seconds. He also secured a strong second-place finish in the Men's 110 Meter Hurdles with a time of 15.67 seconds. Otis further contributed to the team score with a 7th place in the Men's High Jump (1.81m) and was a key leg in the 5th place Men's 4x400 meter Relay team (3:21.91), which also featured Alexandre Atou (Abomey Calavi, Benin), Izzy Zewdie (Las Vegas, Nev.), and Kembre Daniel (Chicago, Ill.).
In the field events, Joshua Martinez Marte (Beloit, Wis.) was a force for the Buccaneers. He claimed the Conference title in the Men's Discus Throw with an impressive mark of 46.68m and added a 3rd place finish in the Men's Shot Put (14.97m). Cooper Rathmann (Milwaukee, Wis.) finished 8th in the Pole Vault, clearing 2.95 meters.Â
Other point scorers for the Buccaneer men included: Josh Yearby (West Park, FL) who finished 7th in the Men's 100 Meter Dash (10.94), Atou who ran a 49.33 in the 400 Meter dash, finishing in 6th place. In the distance races, Daniel finished 7th in the 800 Meter run with a time of 1:57.82 and Dylan Malmgren (Loves Park, Ill.) clocked in at 15:54.20 in the 5000 Meter run.
The Men's 4x100 Meter Relay team (Sumoaro, Atou, Otis, Yearby) unfortunately faced a disqualification.
Women
On the women's side, Beloit saw strong performances, particularly in the field events. Naomee Casey (Broken Arrow, Okla) soared to a 3rd place finish in the Pole Vault, clearing 3.25m. Teammate Haley Carlin (Sarasota, Fla.) also scored in the event, placing 5th with a height of 2.65m. Carlin also made a significant contribution in the Women's Javelin Throw, finishing 4th with a mark of 33.18m.
The Buccaneer women also had a strong day in the throws. Freshman Adelaide Schmitt (Aurora, Colo.) earned 4th place in the Discus Throw (34.84m) and Hadja Bayo (Round Rock, Texas) followed in 6th (34.41m). Naomi Murphy (Dubuque, Iowa) secured points in the High Jump, finishing 4th with a mark of 1.46m.
On the track for the women, Alayna Furch (Saint Charles, Mo.) took 5th place in the 400 Meter Dash (1:00.37) and Cole Miller (Salem, Ore.) follwed just behind in 6th (1:01.20). Both of the Buccaneer relay teams finished in 7th. The 4x100 meter team of Jaslyn Gama (Beloit, Wis.), Casey, Furch and Miller combined for a 51.77 while the 4x400 team of Miller, Furch, Gama and Murphy clocked in at 4:13.80.
The Buccaneers will send athletes to the Last Chance Qualifer in Rock Island, Illinois, May 14th-15th to attempt to solidify spots at Nationals.Â
