DeGeorge to Focus Full-Time on Dugout, Steps Down as Beloit College AD

BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit College President Eric Boynton and Athletic Director Dave DeGeorge announced last week that the college has decided to make a change in the Athletic Director position. The role will now be devoted entirely to athletic administration, with no coaching responsibilities. DeGeorge was asked to focus solely on his AD duties, but he was not ready to give up his coaching responsibilities.

The following information is largely sourced from an interview conducted by Jim Franz of the Belooit Daily News with former Beloit College Athletic Director, Dave DeGeorge.

In his interview with Jim Franz, DeGeorge stated, "I picked baseball and I am going to remain as head coach." He added, "I will remain the athletic director until a new one is hired and in place. Then I'll be an assistant to the new AD."

The decision comes after Beloit College Athletics has seen exponential growth over the past five years. DeGeorge went on to mention that Boynton wants a full-time athletic director, "He really wants an athletic director who is 100 percent AD and not someone split between AD and coaching," DeGeorge said. "We have more coaches and more (athletic) programs and we've never had as many athletes as we do now. He feels this is the right time to do this."

DeGeorge also shared his respect for the college president. "I think the world of Eric Boynton," DeGeorge said. "He is a great guy and has nothing but the best for Beloit College on his mind. Baseball is my passion and my love. When a choice was presented to me, that's what I wanted to do. I'm excited about the future."

A 1989 graduate of Beloit College, DeGeorge has been the Buccaneers' Director of Athletics since May of 2020. The college is set to add both men's and women's hockey this coming school year and will add a women's flag football team in the near future.

"I have loved my experience at Beloit," DeGeorge said. "I worked really hard as athletic director getting through all that COVID stuff. I'm proud of the work that I and others did during that. We have grown programs and we've started to see some successes. Not as much as we want, but we're starting to see some glimmers of hope. We have a larger coaching staff and hired a full-time strength coach and we have so many more athletes. When I think about my time as AD that's what I'm going to think about."

He has been Beloit's head baseball coach since 1991 and as such he guides the most successful program on campus.

"I am really proud of what we've done in baseball," he said.

The Buccaneers have qualified for the NCAA Division III Regionals for three straight seasons including this past spring when they went 30-17 overall. This past spring they repeated as Midwest Conference Tournament champions. DeGeorge has been named MWC Coach of the Year five times and in 2009 was named the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association College Coach of the Year. He is the winningest coach in MWC baseball history and his 585 wins are the most in program history. He is also the winningest coach in the history of Beloit College Athletics.
