Volleyball Rolls Over Spurgeon, Falls to Blackburn in Opening Matches

CARLINVILLE, IL – Beloit College kicked off their 2025-26 women's volleyball season with a decisive 3-0 victory over Spurgeon at Dawes Gymnasium this afternoon. The Buccaneers displayed strong offensive and defensive play, securing the win with set scores of 25-22, 25-23, and 26-24. In their second match of the day, the Buccaneers struggled to find their rhythm offensively throughout the match, and fell in straight sets, 16-25, 12-25, 14-25. 

Match 1 vs Spurgeon: 
From the outset, Beloit demonstrated a cohesive team effort, effectively managing the tie scores and lead changes throughout each set. While Spurgeon showed moments of strength, Beloit consistently found ways to close out the sets, particularly in crucial late-game situations.

For the Bucs, several players delivered key performances that were instrumental in their victory. Selin Tufte (Clarkdale, Ariz.) was a multifaceted contributor, leading the team with 10.5 points derived from her 6 kills and an impressive 4 service aces, coupled with a solid .947 receiving percentage. Aaliyah Gerard (Aiea, HI) also showcased her serving ability with 4 aces, alongside 7 kills that boosted the team's offense. Kierra Rayne Hoover (Albuquerque, New Mexico) was a consistent offensive threat, registering 8 kills on a strong .300 hitting percentage. Maddisyn Adams (Stockett, MT) added to the team's attack with 3 kills and 2 aces, while libero Adelaide Schmitt (Aurora, Colo.) anchored the defense with a team-high 21 digs, repeatedly extending rallies and enabling Beloit's offensive opportunities.

Beloit's victory was a result of a well-rounded performance. The team recorded a total of 29 kills with 21 errors on 110 attacks, resulting in a .073 hitting percentage. Their serving was a significant factor, with 11 service aces against 9 errors. On the defensive end, Beloit managed 60 digs and 2 total team blocks.

Match 2 vs Blackburn: 
Key players in their match against the Beavers included Gerard, she showcased her offensive capabilities with 4 kills and an impressive .250 hitting percentage in the first set. Gerard also contributed significantly on defense, tallying 11 digs. Schmitt was active defensively with 12 digs. Despite countless individual efforts, the team as a whole struggled to generate consistent offense, concluding the match with a -.071 hitting percentage and a 1-1 season record.

The Buccaneers host Moody Bible on Thursday, September 4th at 7 pm at Flood Arena for their home opener.
