WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Beloit College track and field teams made a resounding statement on today, delivering a series of podium finishes, personal records (PR) and a new school record at the Karl Schlender Invitational hosted by UW-Whitewater. Competing against a deep field that included UW-Whitewater, UW-Parkside, and MSOE, the Buccaneers were led by standout performances in the sprints and throwing rings.
Junior Josh Yearby (West Park, FL) proved to be one of the fastest men at the meet. Yearby secured a silver medal in the 60 Meter Dash with a blistering personal best and yet another school record of 6.88, narrowly trailing only Caleb Beightol of UW-Whitewater. Yearby's consistency was on display all day, as he also posted a 6.89 in the prelims.
Senior Nate Otis (Shoreview, Minn.) demonstrated his versatility and veteran leadership. Otis earned a 3rd-place finish in the 400 Meters with a season-best time of 50.58.
In the middle-distance events, Kembre Daniel (Chicago, Ill.) powered his way to a 3rd-place finish in the 800 Meters, crossing the line in 2:00.57. The distance squad also saw success from Dylan Malmgren (Loves Park, Ill.), who took 6th in a competitive 1 mile field with a PR of 4:23.56, and freshman Leo Ramos, who grabbed 8th in the 3000 Meters (9:23.54 PR).
The Buccaneers were equally impressive in the field events, particularly in the throwing circles. Joshua Martinez (Beloit, Wis.) had a banner day, claiming 2nd place in the Shot Put with a toss of 14.46m. He followed that up with a 3rd-place finish in the Weight Throw, hitting a new personal record of 15.66m. Ian Phillips (Machesney Park, Ill.) also added a PR in the weight throw with a distance of 12.61m
In the jumps, John Deary II (Westwego, LA) leaped to 3rd place in the Long Jump with a mark of 6.71 (PR). Senior Izzy Zewdie (Las Vegas, Nev.) showcased his hop-skip-and-jump prowess, taking 4th in the Triple Jump with a season-best 11.92m, while also contributing a 10th-place finish in the long jump (5.95m).
The highlight of the relay events was the Men's 4x200 Meter Relay. The "A" team—comprised of Ayouba Sumoaro (Las Vegas, NV), Otis, Zewdie and Yearby—stormed to a 1st-place finish with a time of 1:33.13, defeating Judson University by over a second.
The success continued in the 4x400 Meter Relay, where the quartet of Otis, Yearby, Daniel and Zewdie took 2nd place overall, clocking in at 3:27.55.
The Beloit women also saw several athletes climb the leaderboard. Naomee Casey (Broken Arrow, Okla) cleared 2.90m in the Pole Vault to secure 5th place, while Haley Carlin (Sarasota, Fla.) finished 9th with a height of 2.45m.
In the hurdles, Niomee Casey (Broken Arrow, Okla) (10.94a) and Carlin (11.90a) both posted season-best times in the 60m prelims.
In the throwing events, Adelaide Schmitt (Aurora, Colo.) provided a strong presence, taking 13th in the Weight Throw with a personal record of 12.58m and 16th in the Shot Put (8.91m).
The Buccaneers' women's Distance Medley Relay team—consisting of Simone de Montigny (Neenah, Wis.), Allie Roberts, Cole Miller (Salem, Ore.), and Addie Bogda—battled to a 5th-place finish with a time of 13:50.31.
The Buccaneers are back in action next weekend at the Spartan Shootout. Action from the A.Y. McDonald Indoor Track in Dubuque, Iowa is set to start at 11 am.
