JANESVILLE, WI – In a Friday night matchup at the Woodman's Sports & Convention Center, the Beloit College Buccaneers (4-19-1, 1-13-0 WIAC) faced a significant challenge against a high-powered UW-River Falls squad. While the Falcons (12-11-1, 6-8-0 WIAC) ultimately claimed an 8-1 victory, the story of the night for the Buccaneers was one of mid-game adjustments, defensive resilience, and a standout performance between the pipes that kept the home crowd engaged until the final horn.
The opening frame was difficult for the Buccaneers, as the Falcons jumped to a 5-0 lead behind a relentless 19-shot barrage. However, the game saw its first major momentum shift just four minutes into the first period.
Anthony Zolezzi (Oswego, IL) entered the game and proved to be the turning point Beloit needed to stabilize their defensive zone. Despite the early deficit, Zolezzi became a human highlight reel for the remainder of the contest, turning away 41 of the 48 shots he faced. His performance allowed the Buccaneers to settle into the game and begin finding their offensive rhythm.
The second period saw a much more competitive Beloit squad. The Buccaneers tightened their neutral zone play and began testing Falcons goaltender Brennan Boynton. The persistence paid off at the 13:31 mark of the second period.
In a clinical offensive sequence, Ben Stewart (Dayton, OH) found a lane to feed Johnny Thrasher (Mautson, WI), who buried his first goal of the season. The goal served as a massive momentum booster for the Beloit bench, proving they could pierce one of the top defenses in the conference.
Perhaps the most impressive takeaway for Beloit was the final twenty minutes of play. After allowing five goals in the first and three in the second, the Buccaneers' defensive unit—led by the shot-blocking efforts of Mac Reed (Waunakee, WI) and Nick Bobroski (Faquay-Varina, NC)—shut down the Falcons completely in the third period.
Beloit's special teams also showed flashes of brilliance. Despite facing five power plays, the Buccaneers' penalty kill unit remained aggressive, particularly in the final frame where they successfully navigated a high-pressure interference minor to keep the Falcons off the board.
The Buccaneers and Falcons meet again tomorrow night at 7 pm.
