Box Score JANESVILLE, WI – Facing one of the most persistent offensive attacks of the season, the Beloit College Buccaneers (4-10-1, 1-14-0 WIAC) displayed remarkable heart on this evening at the Woodman's Sports & Convention Center. While the final score read 7-1 in favor of UW-River Falls, the box score tells a story of a Beloit squad that refused to back down, anchored by a heroic performance in the crease and a mid-game surge that showcased their potential. After the game, the Buccaneers and Beloit College Athletics recognized Sam Holy (Chicago, IL), Nick Bobroski (Faquay-Varina, NC) and Trey Taylor (Abbotsford, BC) as the first ever graduating class of Beloit Men's Hockey.
If there was a single player who defined the Buccaneers' spirit it was goaltender Andrew Yocum (St. Louis, MO). Facing a relentless barrage from the Falcons' offense, Yocum was nothing short of spectacular. He faced a staggering 58 shots on target, turning away 51 saves.
Despite the pressure of eight power-play opportunities for the Falcons (13-11-1, 7-8-0 WIAC), Yocum remained the backbone of the Beloit defense. His composure during a 23-save second period kept the Buccaneers within striking distance and provided the foundation for the team's most significant momentum shift of the night.
After falling behind 4-0 early in the second period, many teams would have folded. Instead, Beloit found another gear. At the 13:20 mark of the second frame, the Buccaneers orchestrated a beautiful offensive sequence that silenced the Falcons' crowd.
Sky Solig (Warroad, MN) found the back of the net for his second goal of the season, finishing off a crisp passing play assisted by Ben Stewart (Dayton, OH) and Taylor. The goal was a testament to Beloit's persistence, coming during a period where they were outshot but remained opportunistic. For a significant stretch following the Solig goal, the Buccaneers' energy was palpable, as they tightened their defensive gaps and forced the Falcons into uncharacteristic turnovers.
Beloit's "never-quit" attitude was also evident in their physical play and shot-blocking. Mac Reed (Waunakee, WI) was a force on the blue line, leading the team with three blocked shots and providing a veteran presence during a difficult third period.
The Buccaneers also saw strong contributions from their faceoff specialists. Joe Weber (Rochester, NY) was a bright spot in the circles, winning 12 of his 18 draws (66.7%), while J.D. Shoniker (Burlington, ON)held his own with 10 wins, ensuring Beloit had a fighting chance at puck possession against a high-velocity opponent.
