EAU CLAIRE, WI – The Beloit College Buccaneers women's ice hockey team faced one of their toughest challenges of the year this evening. Traveling to the Hobbs Ice Center to take on a powerhouse UW-Eau Claire (17-6-0, 9-1-0 WIAC) squad, the Buccaneers (2-20-0, 0-9-0 WIAC) displayed a resilient defensive front, led by a spectacular performance in goal, despite ultimately falling 5-0.
While the final score favored the Blugolds, the narrative of the game was centered on Beloit's refusal to back down under immense pressure.
The undisputed star for Beloit was freshman goaltender Janelle Quast (Litchfield, Minn.). Facing a relentless barrage of 52 shots on goal, Quast turned in one of the most impressive performances of the season. She was perfect for nearly the entire first period after an early fluke goal, stopping 16 of 17 shots in the opening frame.
Quast's workload only increased as the game progressed; she turned away a staggering 19 shots in the second period alone. Her ability to track the puck through traffic and deny high-percentage scoring chances kept the Buccaneers within striking distance for the majority of the contest.
Beloit's momentum was best seen in their commitment to "selling out" for the team. When Quast wasn't making saves, her teammates were sacrificing their bodies to block shots. Tate Hutchinson (Calgary, Alberta) led the defensive unit with a game-high 5 blocked shots, while Addison Gruhlke (Eau Claire, Wis.) added 2 blocks of her own.
A key momentum shift occurred midway through the first period. After conceding a goal just 41 seconds into the game, the Buccaneers could have folded. Instead, the defensive unit locked in, killing off a power play and holding the high-powered Blugold offense scoreless for the next 27 minutes of play. This stretch of disciplined hockey showcased the potential of the Beloit defensive system.
The Buccaneers and Blugolds will meet again tomorrow afternoon. Puck drop is set for 2 pm.
