EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — This afternoon at the Hobbs Ice Center, the Beloit College Buccaneers faced a formidable opponent in the heavily favored UW-Eau Claire Blugolds. While the final scoreboard showed a 5-0 victory for the home team, the result only told a fraction of the story. The Buccaneers displayed immense defensive grit, a refusal to quit, and a historic goaltending performance that kept Beloit fighting until the final horn.
The defining storyline of the game for Beloit College was the absolute masterclass put on by goaltender Janelle Quast (Litchfield, Minn.). Facing a staggering barrage from a UW-Eau Claire team that improves to 18-6-0 on the season, Quast was a relentless warrior in the crease. She faced 97 total shot attempts and 67 shots on goal, turning away an incredible 62 shots to keep the Buccaneers' hopes alive throughout the grueling matchup.
Quast set the tone early, making 22 saves in the first period alone, allowing the Blugolds just a single goal despite heavy offensive zone time. Her crowning achievement came in the second period, where she stared down 29 shots on target and stopped 27 of them, routinely frustrating the Blugold forwards.
After being heavily out-chanced in the opening twenty minutes, The Bucs found their footing and shifted the momentum during the second period. The Buccaneers adjusted their breakout strategies and began taking the fight to UW-Eau Claire.
Going from just a single shot on goal in the first period, Beloit generated 12 total shot attempts and put 6 shots on target in the middle frame. As the period progressed, the Buccaneers established sustained offensive pressure. Late in the period, key forwards stepped up to challenge UWEC goaltender Alexa Backmann. Madi Hoffman (Madison, Wis.) sparked the attack with a sharp shot on goal at the 16:28 mark, followed shortly by strong scoring bids from Addison Gruhlke (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Julia Fussy (Mahtomedi, Minn.). This late-period surge forced the Blugolds onto their heels and proved the Buccaneers could string together dangerous offensive sequences against top-tier competition.
The physical battle extended into the third period, where Beloit's relentless forechecking finally forced the Blugolds into a string of mistakes. The Buccaneers earned three crucial power-play opportunities in the final frame.
During these advantages, Makenzee Kostiuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario) emerged as a primary offensive catalyst, firing back-to-back challenging shots on goal in the opening minutes of the period. Maintaining possession during these key shifts was made possible by the gritty work of Beloit's centers. Kylie Schryer (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) and Natasha Ludwig (Royalton) were workhorses in the faceoff circles all afternoon, winning 11 and 8 draws, respectively, to help jumpstart Beloit's attacks.
While UW-Eau Claire managed to pull away with two third-period goals—including a power-play marker from Adrienne Hansen—the Buccaneers' defensive structure and special teams effort never wavered.
The Buccaneers will close out the 2025-26 regular season next weekend in Superior, Wisconsin. Game times against the Yellowjackets are set for 6 pm on Friday and 2 pm on Saturday.
