Men's Basketball Unable to Hang on Late Against Rams

MOUNT VERNON, IA – In a gritty Valentine's Day showdown at the Small Athletic and Wellness Center, the Beloit College Buccaneers showcased remarkable resilience and defensive intensity before ultimately falling to Cornell College, 59-52. Despite the final score, the Buccaneers (5-18,0-14 MWC) controlled the tempo for large stretches of the game, proving they could go toe-to-toe with the Rams (6-17,5-9 MWC) in a match that featured seven lead changes and seven ties.

The Buccaneers entered the contest with a clear defensive blueprint, neutralizing Cornell's perimeter game in the first half. Beloit's offense found its rhythm early, matching the Rams shot-for-shot to head into the locker room deadlocked at 33-33.

The most significant momentum shift occurred at the start of the second half. Beloit exploded out of the gate with a stifling 8-0 scoring run, punctuated by disciplined defensive rotations and transition buckets. This surge allowed the Buccaneers to seize their largest lead of the game—a 39-33 advantage with 16:36 remaining in the second period. During this stretch, the Beloit defense held Cornell scoreless for nearly four minutes, frustrating the Rams' primary options.

Beloit's balanced attack was led by several key contributors who kept the Buccaneers within striking distance until the final minute. Dae'Quan Davis (Chicago, Ill.) provided the primary offensive spark, finishing with a team-high 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting. His ability to find gaps in the Rams' zone was vital during Beloit's second-half surge. A force in the paint, Lathan Lewis (Rockford, Ill.) anchored the Buccaneers' rebounding efforts. He narrowly missed a double-double, recording 8 points and a team-high 8 rebounds, including two crucial offensive boards that extended possessions. Anthony Carter (Greenfield, Wis.) played nearly the entire game (35 minutes), contributing 8 points, 5 rebounds, and two assists. Carter was the steady hand for the Buccaneers, orchestrating the offense under heavy pressure. Owen Geiger (Fort Atkinson, Wis.) matched the physicality of the Rams, chipping in 8 points and 4 rebounds, while playing a key role in a Beloit defense that limited Cornell to just 36% shooting from the floor. Zayn Young (Milwaukee, Wis.) provided a much-needed lift off the bench, scoring 7 points on efficient 3-of-6 shooting to keep the Buccaneers' offense moving when the starters needed a breather.

The Buccaneers' defense was the story of the afternoon. Beloit forced 23 Cornell turnovers, converting those mistakes into 15 points. Their interior defense was particularly impressive, outscoring the Rams 30-24 in the paint and generating 14 second-chance points through sheer hustle.

However, as the second half progressed, the Buccaneers' shooting went cold. After a solid first half, the team struggled from beyond the arc, finishing the game just 1-of-17 from three-point range. Despite the lack of perimeter scoring, Beloit's "never-say-die" attitude kept the game a one-possession affair until the closing moments, as Cornell was forced to seal the game at the free-throw line.

The Buccaneers will play their final home game of the 2025-26 season at home on Wednesday night. They will host Lawrence University at Flood Arena. Tip is set for 5:30 pm.
