SUPERIOR, Wis. – In a game defined by defensive grit and a masterclass performance between the pipes, the Beloit College Buccaneers (2-22-0, 0-11-0 WIAC) pushed the University of Wisconsin-Superior to the final horn, ultimately falling in a narrow 1-0 decision this evening at Siinto S. Wessman Arena.
While the scoreboard favored the Yellowjackets (3-20-1, 3-8-0 WIAC), the story of the night was the sheer resilience of the Beloit defense and the spectacular play of goaltender Madison Bliss (Fort Frances, Ontario).
From the opening puck drop, Bliss was the focal point of the Buccaneers' effort. Facing a relentless offensive barrage, Bliss turned aside a staggering 47 of 48 shots. Her performance was nothing short of heroic, keeping Beloit within striking distance even as UWS controlled the shot clock.
Bliss was particularly dominant in the first two periods, racking up 18 saves in the first and 17 in the second. Her ability to track the puck through traffic and deny high-danger chances provided the Buccaneers with a psychological edge, frustrating the Superior shooters for over 59 minutes of play.
The Buccaneers established an early tone of physicality and discipline. Beloit's penalty kill was a perfect 4-for-4 on the night, a testament to the structured defensive play led by Claire Dixon (Edwards, Colo.) and Hannah Chady (Janesville, Wis. ).
A major momentum shift occurred in the second period. Despite Kendal Gustavsson finally breaking the deadlock at the 8:14 mark to give UWS a 1-0 lead, Beloit did not buckle. Instead, the Buccaneers intensified their defensive pressure. Chady led the team with three blocked shots, while Dixon and Fianne Makela (Duluth, MN) each contributed two, sacrificing their bodies to keep the deficit at a single goal.
The Buccaneers saw a spark of offensive momentum late in the second and early in the third period. Kylie Schryer (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) was a force in the faceoff circle, winning seven draws and creating transition opportunities. Natasha Ludwig (Royalton) also provided stability at center, winning five faceoffs and helping Beloit maintain puck possession during critical neutral-zone battles.
As the third period wound down, Beloit looked to find the equalizer. Madi Hoffman (Madison, Wis.) and Makenzee Kostiuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario) were active in the offensive zone, searching for lanes against UWS goaltender Maddie Wostrel.
The Buccaneers' best chance for a comeback was momentarily hampered by a late penalty, but the PK unit once again stood firm. In a final strategic gamble, Beloit pulled Bliss for an extra attacker with 22 seconds remaining. While the equalizer remained elusive, the Buccaneers' ability to keep the game a one-score affair against a high-volume shooting team showed a significant step forward in team identity and defensive cohesion.
The Bucs and Yellowjackets wrap up the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm.
