BELOIT, Wis. – In a Wednesday night matchup at Flood Arena, the Beloit College Buccaneers women's basketball team displayed impressive bench depth before falling 74-55 to a surging Lawrence University squad.
While the final score favored the Vikings (19-5, 12-3 MWC)), the story of the game was Buccaneers' (6-18, 3-12 MWC) ability to weather a difficult start and outpace their opponents in key stretches of the contest.
The game began as a defensive struggle for the Buccaneers, who found themselves trailing 16-4 after a cold shooting performance in the opening ten minutes. However, the second quarter saw a dramatic shift in momentum.
Refusing to be intimidated by the early deficit, Beloit found their rhythm and actually outscored Lawrence 17-15 in the second frame. The turning point of the half came at the 2:01 mark when Brooke Foster (Machesney Park, Ill.) sparked a 6-0 scoring run, cutting into the lead and energizing the home crowd. This surge proved that when the Buccaneers find their offensive flow, they can compete with the top tier of the conference.
Beloit's tenacity remained on display through the final whistle. Even as Lawrence looked to pull away in the fourth quarter, the Buccaneers continued to attack, putting up 18 points in the final period—their highest-scoring quarter of the night.
Beloit's offensive effort was balanced, characterized by a "next-woman-up" mentality. Several key players stepped into the spotlight. Foster provided the spark Beloit needed off the bench, leading the team with 13 points. She was lethal from beyond the arc, shooting a team-high 75% (3-for-4) from three-point range. Kaitlin Davis (Platte City, Mo.) was a force in the paint and at the charity stripe. She finished with 11 points, going a clinical 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, helping Beloit maintain a solid 75% team free-throw average for the game. Hailey Johnson (South Milwaukee, Wis.) anchored the defensive end, contributing 8 points while leading the team with 2 blocks and 2 steals, frustrating Lawrence's interior shooters. A workhorse on the glass, Bailey Darneal (Colorado Springs, CO) hauled in a team-high 8 rebounds and chipped in 7 points, playing nearly 30 minutes of gritty basketball.
One of the most encouraging signs for Beloit was the productivity of their reserves. The Buccaneers' bench accounted for 28 of the team's 55 points, nearly half of the total offensive output. This depth allowed Beloit to stay fresh and keep the pressure on Lawrence throughout the second half.
Additionally, the Buccaneers were effective in the paint, matching Lawrence with 28 points in the "dirty areas" and showing a willingness to fight for second-chance opportunities.
The Buccaneers well close out the regular season at Ripon on Saturday. Tip off from Weiske Gymnasium is set for 3 pm.
