BELOIT, Wis. – Behind a stellar performance from Liam Walker (Elmhurst, Ill.) and a stout defensive showing, the Beloit College Buccaneers secured a commanding 11-3 victory over Spalding University this afternoon at Strong Stadium.
The Buccaneers (1-0, 0-0 NACC) utilized a balanced attack and relentless pressure to outshoot their opponents 43-27, effectively shutting down the Golden Eagles' (0-3, 0-0 HCLC) offense for the majority of the contest.
The story of the game was undoubtedly Beloit's Walker. The standout attacker was unstoppable, netting a staggering seven goals to lead all scorers.
Walker got the Buccaneers on the board late in the first period with an unassisted strike to tie the game 1-1. He proved to be a threat in every phase of the game, scoring an unassisted man-up (UP) goal in the third period to extend the lead to 8-2, and even adding a man-down (DN) goal in the fourth period to put the game well out of reach.
While Walker provided the bulk of the scoring, the Buccaneers' offense benefited from several key playmakers. Alexander Klemp (Broomfield, Colo.) was the second-leading scorer for Beloit, finding the back of the net twice. His first goal came midway through the second period to give Beloit a 4-1 cushion, followed by another unassisted strike in the third. Rilan Larmore (Olympia, Wash.) scored early in the first period off an assist from Samuel Van Der Kolk (Grand Haven, Mich.), marking Beloit's first lead of the day—a lead they would never relinquish. Parker Davis (Inver Grove Heights, MN) added a late fourth-quarter goal to cap off the Beloit scoring surge. Ryder Story (Salem, Ore.) played the role of primary distributor, recording two crucial assists on Walker's goals in the third and fourth periods.
On the other side of the field, the Beloit defense and goalkeeping were nearly impenetrable. Goalie Christian Moore (Dubuque, Iowa) was a wall in the net, recording 12 saves on 15 shots on goal. Moore's performance was particularly vital in the third period, where he helped weather a Spalding rally to keep them scoreless for the entire 15-minute frame.
The Buccaneers also excelled in the "dirty work," picking up 28 ground balls. Defensively, Davis was instrumental in transition, causing three turnovers to disrupt Spalding's rhythm.
Spalding struck first with a goal from Giovanni Distasio at the 13:58 mark of the opening period, but the momentum shifted quickly. Beloit responded with a 5-1 run to closed the first half leading 5-2.
The Buccaneers completely took over in the second half, outscoring Spalding 6-1. The defensive unit, led by Moore, held Spalding scoreless for over 30 consecutive minutes of play, spanning from the middle of the second period until the closing minutes of the game.
The Buccaneers are back in action at Strong Stadium next Saturday when they host Alma College. Game time is set for 12 pm.
